Last year there were 7 teams below that mark - NorthNuck
That's about what I expected, this is what I expect from a team that has playoff ambitions despite not having a playoff roster. But I can still hope #top5pick

At this point it really seems like we're gonna finish is that poopty 8-12 range. My hope then would be that JB could pay our first + Hansen or whatever we can afford to move into the top 5
Unless he could acquire a low first in addition to the one we already have, I'd be okay with that too. - NorthNuck
I think if we can get a top 5 pick out of the lottery or because we are a bottom 5 team great, but if you are going to start moving Hansen and other players I want additional high picks not a slightly better position.
I like Benning's chances of getting a couple of good players at 8 and 29 or 8 and 35 etc than moving a down 3 spots to get a possibly superior player.
I know many want to land one of very top picks but if we end up in the expected range I would say volume of 1st, 2nd, 3rd rounders would be more important. Make a trade or 2 and give JB a chance to do what he's best at.
It's pretty descent, for sure. I think we both know which I'd prefer and why. If you look at the top-10 over the last decade and the top-5, there is a pretty significant difference between 1-5 and 6-10.

Slight edit.
Also, down goes brown talking about Sedins to the Habs. I'd love to see them go there and win. I can't see them being moved though. - golfingsince
I thought the same about Naslund. But I was happy he got a chance to play in NY. I would feel the same way about the twins if they went to Montreal. Go get that Stanley Cup because it ain't happening here. Not in the next four years anyway.

Having JB trade to gain draft picks? Oh Lord. - bloatedmosquito
That is not a catch 22. he's simply not done this as a GM yet and needs to start this year. Seems speculation is FA is hamstringing his ability to do these moves and is in favor of competing now (I'm not sure he really watches game, he just wants to see the arena full) and so want the "win now moves" just to make the playoffs.

That's why I added the bit and the end. Picking 8th and 29th would be great for us imo, people only seem to care about how high the picks are but volume is more important

I disagree, they are all lost seasons. - belcherbd
I think the organization can take pride in the back-to-back prez trophies even if the league has done everything in their power to dismiss the achievement of being the best team in the regular season.
It's a completely insignificant honour. The reward system in the NHL is a hot mess. Has been for years.

It's a catch 22 if the person who is given the responsibility of getting this team out of its current mess is the same person who's had a hand in putting the team in the mess it's in.
Trading is not JB strength. Maybe he's hasn't earned league cred yet but his trades have been Meh so far.

JBs trades haven't put us where we are. If you really think that, you have a very short memory...

I think there are many things this organization can take pride in and personally I don't know that winning the cup is all that significant as a fan.
They are all lost seasons though in the sense that I choose to spend x amount of time reading, watching discussing this team. This year is exciting to watch the development and is no more of a lost season then seeing them win the presidents trophy in 2012 and get knocked out in 5 games.

Again, If you look at the volume of quality players picked in the top-5 as opposed to the other 25 picks (26 starting this year) it is very significant. if you take the top-5 from 2006 to 2016 (ten years) and compare it to the rest of the first round picks, the 50 players in the top-5 range is a who's who of HOFer's. While the rest of the first round has a solid amount of those types of performers, it's statistically not even close (even if you just compare 1-5 to 6-10 it's not very close) which shouldn't be much of surprise. In "weak' drafts like some are alleging this year's is, picking in the top-5 is actually even more pertinent.
I do agree with that getting more picks is very important (I really, really hope we do), but the value of top-5 picks is simply undeniable.

I'd rather pick 8th, take the slow road to building this team up, and have the franchise maintain some dignity unlike EDM, TOR, BUF, etc.
What's the point in watching if we aren't trying to win? - NorthNuck
I like to use WC's Team North America as an example of how to generate excitement around a team that might be able to complete with the league elite. Youth, skill, enthusiasm, and team determination. I can accept those as entertainment in place of just winning.
In their heyday, NJ Devils won a lot. Not very exciting though...
If there in another Laine, McDavid, Ekblad, or even a MacKinnon available in the draft you got to go for it. One pick could change the whole atmosphere around a bad team.
