It is deeper, which means stronger IMO. Matthews and laine are in a league of their own. But I think Patrick is as slightly better than Puljarvi or Dubois Which is not bad. If Patrick was in last years draft he would have been a guaranteed 3rd OA, not just because CBJ needed a center.
- Retinalz

I read an article a while ago from the Bobfather where he polled a bunch of scouts asking them to place Patrick in last years draft.

They placed him between 5 and 10. They also had Timothy Liljegren included but I don't think any had him in the top 10.

Greetings all,

Noob in the house so I felt it would be appropriate to give a bit of an intro while dispelling the immediate 'alt' account warriors.

Believe it or not have been reading Canuck's/Carol's blogs on Hockeybuzz for about 5 years and only today (finished) setting up an account as I'm long overdue to post a comment or 2. Every time I think I should complete the registration and post, I come across another post shredding nighthawk or some other poor schlep and I back off (kinda like not being able to P before a long road trip because someone knocked).

I am very familiar with the crowd, more than you would think but that's how lurkers roll. I know CanucksDon isn't really a Don and is the captain of the Vegas cheer leading squad. I'm familiar with Marwood's Jazz cigarettes and ASL's woodshed (or wood pile whichever you prefer) these play significant roles in my own ability to cope in these dark Canuck times. I know that Vantel is Jim Benning and Redmile is Michael Ferklund (I made that last one up but he does remind me....). Speaking of nighthawk, I promise to spell out every word and keep that grammer tight. Makita, in my mind's eye is really just the old guy from the Karate Kid - at least that's the vision. He and Vantel sure like their grape. Codes, Leftcoast, Lord Huge, Golfing Since, Retinalz, Belcher, etc etc etc.

I'm going to probably look for my chance to flag someone right away here and get that out of the way and then wait for a pm from Makita on the reality that someone saying "flagged" doesn't mean click the little flag icon.

I follow Carol on Twitter so I know immediately when the new blogs are up. I'm @bowel_auger "Opiated Nucksfan" on Twitter. I am a Canucks season ticket member 4 years running and plan to be again next year. I don't gauge whether I'll renew on someone else's sob stories about asset management or whether the GM is better at drafting than they are at GM'ing. I'm old enough to say I've followed the team since inception into the league and have done hard time along with everyone before things got rolling (I survived the Troy Gamble years) I'm a canucks fan and a hockey fan. Period. This year I find myself entertained by the team which is the purpose of season tickets in the first place. I'm not expecting playoffs this year per se, but I will gladly do 1 round and out in the playoffs only because it makes this blog so much more interesting I'm not a draftist or a tankster, just let the dam chips fall where they may.

Ok - that's about it, let me have it...and No, this is not nighthawk.

I'm talking about reality. The canucks will not finish in last, or 2nd last, or 3rd last. If we win the lottery in the spring I'll be just as happy as you will. However. Chances are if we wanted to move from where we will be slated in the first round up to 1st or 2nd overall it will cost us a massive amount of assets and probably be a horrible deal. Do you really want to set the team back further for the sake of getting 1 good player?
- NorthNuck

Depends on who that "one good player" is. Does it not?

Secondly, the canucks don't have a massive amount of assets. Other than Horvat, who do you consider a true asset? You can say Brock or Olli but we really don't know yet. I would trade just about anything to draft a young, skilled, exciting core player.

Well I guess in the next few months we'll see if you're right? If the TDL comes and goes and we're not setup better for the draft I will concede that you were right

that's a safe bet because I'm rarely correct. I just like to debate canucks.

I would count Tanev, Sutter, Guddy, Hutton as assets. Maybe not as big as Horvat but assets nonetheless.

My advice is turn off your TV for 8 years come back when we have a perfect D and
8 first overall picks. This team is the worst team in the history of hockey and the managers are as dumb as sh!t.

No, didn't say that either. The original comment was that JB must trade to gain draft picks so he can "work his magic".

My comment was that I don’t think JB is the best person to initiate trades to gain draft picks based on his actions to date. I’m not dishing his draft record, I dishing his GM abilities.

- bloatedmosquito

Has benning been actually been good at drafting?

Seems like he’s taking advantage of contract risk other gm’s have stayed away from. Guys like boeser, demko and trymatkin all had more contract risk than guys in the chl.

It’s actually worked out from him pretty well so far. But i don't think it speaks to better scouting abilities than other gm's.

True but he did draft two of the best players in all of US college hockey in Thatcher Demko and Brock Boeser. Some of his late rounders are starting to show promise.

Let me put it this way... his drafting is better than his free agent signings, which is better than his trades. Beggars can't be choosers.
