This sums it all up.

Well done Pach.

Tough one last night, even for an optimist.

And for all of you scorchtake specialists about to come in with "X sucks," please read Pach's piece. It's very thoughtful, and very well done, and recognizes that last night's failure (let's admit it: last night was a horrible FAILURE) is attributable to almost everyone in the organization.

Read Pach. He dissects it all very, very well.

And to be honest, that has me even more glum today, because it would be much easier to fix if it was just "X sucks!"

I'll get a few more cups of coffee, and hang with my kid for a while after he wakes up. Then after my batteries are charged up a bit, I'll come back to deal with all the specialists.

Nilsson is probably the better goalie of the two Sabres goalies. Lehner has never been able to live up to his top-prospect billing.

The Sabres might want to follow the Flames here, who have relegated their much heralded acquisition to back up duties and replaced him with the hot hand at the top of the depth chart.

This change won't automatically make the Sabres winners, but should give them a better chance at winning some games in the short term.

I think the rest of the team has seen through camp, practices and now games that Nilsson is the more technically sound of the two goalies and they play with more confidence when he is between the pipes.

honestly dont think its a big deal. there are obvious flaws on this team unanimously agreed upon by sabres fans no matter where they stand on certain players. Until they're addressed its going to be hard for them to hang with the big boys and you'll sometimes end up with games like last night.

In short, its less about x player sucking and more about we are in dire need of player x

Even if any of this was true, they're not losing these games because of goaltending. Assuming you're right the result tonight is still a loss, and that holds true for most of the losses.

Well, Nilsson stoned McDavid on a breakaway that would have likely sealed a win for the Oilers the other night. Given what we have seen from Lehner in shootouts, does he make that key stop?

Nilsson also earned the Sabres 3 points in two 40+ save performances against Pitt and NJ at home in games that might have gone the other way with Lehner manning the crease.

What do the Sabres have to lose at this point by starting the goalie with the better winning %?

not saying they have anything to gain or lose just that its not the actual problem with the team unless there's some rift we dont know about and the sabres are just happier to finish more chances with anders in net.

I think what is making the Lehner /Nilsson tandem so hard to swallow is that both Lehner and Nilsson are Swedish goalies, they both are big, Nilsson 6'6 217, Lehner 6'4 240, and they're both playing with roughly the same stats.

But the rub is the fact that Lehner cost us pick #21 in the 2015 draft, a deep draft which would have gotten us a very good prospect if we would have made the pick. And, Nilsson only cost us a 5th. That's like buying a Mercedes for 50K and then a week later see that someone is giving away the exact same car on craigslist for free. You may have gotten the second vehicle for free, which is great, but it still bums you out over what you paid on the first one you can't give back for a refund.

They scored 1 goal, ONE.
When they score 4 and lose, then let's blame it on the goalie, no matter which one.

Spot on Pach.
And the impact for me, like what the clown came to the conclusion as well....time to find Player X & Y on the left side for both ROR and Eichel's lines...two snipers who finish. Find that, and next year we may have another top 2 Dman in the fold already.

Let's hope so because Murray's keen eye for talent and our budget-less scouting department hasn't produced too many mind-blowing gems.

*shrugs*

I don't know of that many "mind-blowing" gems that are unearthed two years after being drafted...although i'm not very keen on his 2014 draft the scouting department may have found it's stride in the next two beginning with guhle and on to Estephan, Pu and Murray...

but it's still too early to tell

I have high hopes for them too, but our scouting department goes beyond Murray. It goes back to 2011 when Pegula said the handcuffs are off, so you really have to look at what we've drafted since then and its been nothing of quality in rounds 2-7 from 2011-2014 with the exception of McCabe.
