Wasn't the NHL supposed to change the rules on the pad size for goaltenders? Did they end up following through with that? Last I heard, it could be a mid-year change (which would be completely stupid to do ithen, but that's besides the point). I wonder if by keeping Lehner and another tall goalie if Buffalo could gain an advantage with pad sizes, because they wouldn't have to change, right?. If/When they do change the pad size rules, I wouldn't mind keeping Lehner around to see how things shake out with the rest of the League. At least with him, we would know what we are getting.
- ajb2493

Lehner and Nilsson are 2 of maybe a handful of goalies who are so large they don't have to change their pad sizes

I think what is making the Lehner /Nilsson tandem so hard to swallow is that both Lehner and Nilsson are Swedish goalies, they both are big, Nilsson 6'6 217, Lehner 6'4 240, and they're both playing with roughly the same stats.

But the rub is the fact that Lehner cost us pick #21 in the 2015 draft, a deep draft which would have gotten us a very good prospect if we would have made the pick. And, Nilsson only cost us a 5th. That's like buying a Mercedes for 50K and then a week later see that someone is giving away the exact same car on craigslist for free. You may have gotten the second vehicle for free, which is great, but it still bums you out over what you paid on the first one you can't give back for a refund.

- sskkoo1

Sure, but by not being able to see into the future, you have to work with the info at hand. And maybe you weren't here when a bunch of people were really, really pissed off that Murray gave up a 5th round pick to get Nilsson. And have you seen Nilsson's career NHL numbers? They're sh¡te. He was really, really good in the KHL though.

Hindsight is great and all, but since we don't yet have the ability to see into the future, or go back to the past, it's all just female dogging to female dog.

I have high hopes for them too, but our scouting department goes beyond Murray. It goes back to 2011 when Pegula said the handcuffs are off, so you really have to look at what we've drafted since then and its been nothing of quality in rounds 2-7 from 2011-2014 with the exception of McCabe.
- sskkoo1

Considering the chances of finding a quality player in rounds 2-7 are hilariously low, I'm talking 5% for a 3rd round player, 3.5% for a 4th, down to ~2% for the rest of the draft, there are some spikes to 5% because some really good players were found a few times throughout history late, mostly in the early to mid 90's before the internet and every game played anywhere on Earth was available to download. The average rating for players drafted in the 3rd and on is a minor leaguer with less than 50 NHL games played. Even once you get past the 15th overall pick the average player is rated at "very good minor league player". A lot of people fail to realize how hard it is to draft players in the NHL, just because sometimes players are found outside the top 10 doesn't mean it happens often, and when it does happen it's mostly luck.

What's the deal with McCormick? why won't the league just let us terminate his contract it is obvious his playing days are over?
- sskkoo1

Because he's "injured" and you can't do anything with injured players, cut them from training camp, send to minors, juniors, I don't even think you can buy them out. You can come to an injury settlement with the player though. Besides he has no effect on the team or it's cap, so what's the problem? It's not like we need the room for contracts, we only have 43 currently.

No one fails to realize this. The fact is that regardless of whether they are considered lottery tickets, you still need to hit once and a while. Saying something is hard to do, so we should never expect to do it is a typical Buffalo sports mentality

They listed cody hodgson as one of the better 10th overall picks. So theres that. And fat balloon was also mentioned, one of my favorite nicknames. Along with ivan the terrible coach.

Probably the same way calgary managed to score 6 against the powerhouse known as Winnipeg. With elite talent such as Joel Armia, Drew Stafford And "Tyre Myrse" that the Sabres wasted in a trade for Bagonsieian and Coke-Kane.

Inside the Sabres: Poor drafts sunk the depth

There were 210 players selected in the 2010 NHL Draft. Nearly half – 102 – have reached the NHL.

Only one of those players was picked by Buffalo, and Mark Pysyk isn’t even on the team anymore.

If anyone is wondering why the Sabres’ depth is lacking, the NHL Draft tells the answer.

The mid- to late 2000s were a time of big misses by the Sabres’ draftniks, led by former General Manager Darcy Regier. Picks made (or not made) a decade ago are the ones hurting Buffalo today.

Marek Zagrapan, Philipp Gogulla, Dennis Persson and Drew Schiestel lead the list of first- and second-round letdowns. None made it to the NHL. While draft mates such as T.J. Oshie, James Neal, Nick Foligno and Alec Martinez are contributing to victories and Stanley Cup runs, the Sabres’ quartet is skating in Europe or out of the game completely.

The Sabres rarely lucked out with later picks, further hurting the cause. Not one of the 13 players selected in rounds three through seven in 2008 or 2010 made it to the NHL. Those are the guys who should be helping out in Buffalo.

Instead, the Sabres’ call-ups this season have combined for three goals and six assists in 68 games....more...

You get what you pay for.

The Sabres were a miserly penny-pinching organization and it has shown up on the ice.

Now we have a Daddy-war Bucks owner but are guilty of spending unwisely.

Buffalo just can't get it right.

I must admit that I am seriously conflicted with the makeup of this team.
We have several good pieces in place like ROR, Okposo, Eichel's, Reinhart, Risto, McCabe....and we have equally populated duds based on their performance versus cost such as Molson, Kane, Bogo, Kuli, Gorges, Franson...and too many 4th line performances, Girgenson, Carrier, DeLo, Bailey, Baptiste, Hurley, and more.
I'm also concerned about the early leadership qualities from Reinhart and Eichel...I know they are very young...however there are several young players drafted over the past several years who are Stepping their game up early on...I'm not seeing that from those 2 yet...they are young and solid yes, but I expect more from them on a consistent basis even if they are young.
I am hopeful Nylander and Guhle are gems in development (Guhle looks to be)...but we need more and I'm not sure we have the ammunition to get there over the course of the next 12 - 15 months.
