"Friedman also reports the Buffalo Sabres are getting calls about forward Zemgus Girgensons, whose playing time has declined of late. The Sabres aren’t selling low as they still believe in him. "
"At the risk of upsetting Girgensons fans, it appears he’s overrated. "

I was one of the guys this summer who said give Girgs 25 games or so to prove himself. I didn't want to give up on him. Until now. Trade him.

I still think he has a chance to be good....I place the blame on Bylsma...for many things that are wrong with this team |

I must admit that I am seriously conflicted with the makeup of this team.
We have several good pieces in place like ROR, Okposo, Eichel's, Reinhart, Risto, McCabe....and we have equally populated duds based on their performance versus cost such as Molson, Kane, Bogo, Kuli, Gorges, Franson...and too many 4th line performances, Girgenson, Carrier, DeLo, Bailey, Baptiste, Hurley, and more.
I'm also concerned about the early leadership qualities from Reinhart and Eichel...I know they are very young...however there are several young players drafted over the past several years who are Stepping their game up early on...I'm not seeing that from those 2 yet...they are young and solid yes, but I expect more from them on a consistent basis even if they are young.
I am hopeful Nylander and Guhle are gems in development (Guhle looks to be)...but we need more and I'm not sure we have the ammunition to get there over the course of the next 12 - 15 months. - IonSabres
The truth that no one wants to hear or do, is that we are not done building via draft yet. We need to bottom out this year to insure the teams long-term success. We need another top five pick to round out this teams future top 6. RoR, Okpo, Rein, Eichel, Nylander (if everything goes right?), and player X???
Player X will not be Kane or Ennis long-term. Patrick or Nico would be mighty nice filling in player X's spot. Or, we could also use Liljegren, who in a year or two would be partnering our top line with Risto.
We also have a boatload of UFAs we need to sell and a push for 9th place doesn't get us any return for them. Gionta, Franson, Nilsson will all bring back a 3rd, and Kuli will grab a 2nd. With what we already have that should really restock the system. Plus, we may even have enough to trade up and get back into the 1st round. |

My favorite:
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I doubt Cooper’s going anywhere. GM Steve Yzerman will point to his injury-depleted lineup as the reason why the Bolts are struggling.
But injuries are just an excuse... |

There are lots of things that lead us to where we are at this point in the season. The single incident that has the largest negative impact was Eichel's injury the day before the season began, and to the extent that Bylsma can be blamed for that, at all, it's for putting Eichel on the ice at the same time as the guy who falls down more than any other player on the team (maybe the league): Girgensons.
Kinda ironic, eh??! |

Gionta isn't going anywhere. His plan all along is to end his career in Buffalo.
Franson will get a 3rd
Nilsson isn't getting moved.
Kulikov probably isn't getting moved either.
Player X can be Kane but he is better on a 3rd line IMO Kane Larsson Carrier would be nice but his salary is pretty high.
Ennis is useless.
There is no reason to tank this season. If 5 of your top 6 is locked here long term there is no reason you can't find someone to plug in and play. If Nylander is legit that is.
The big hole is a top pairing D with Risto. It can be McCabe but I think a 2nd pairing of McCabe and Guhle would be perfect assuming you can find someone to be that top pairing guy with Risto.
Bogo can go. |

I'm running a test batch of an old-time holiday punch called wassail today. Mulled wine and ale with baked apples. The kitchen will smell great and I'll be in fine form by 4:00 games. |

I agree on keeping Nilsson if he continues to play well. But, if we are at the bottom of the league around the deadline, I don't see why Gionta wouldn't want to be moved to a playoff team for one last shot.
We have too many holes still in this lineup not to continue building via draft. McCabe is real good and getting better, but top pairing may truly be pushing his ability. We have no more assets to pay in trades without creating even more holes in the roster, and the UFA market is doubtful at best.
If Nylander does pan out, than yes, I'll agree that finding a plug-and-play #6 is a viable option. |

Nylander ROR Okposo
player X Eichel Reinhart
Kane Larsson Carrier
Foligno Girgensons Baptiste
Risto Player Y
McCabe Guhle
Kulikov Player Z
Lehner
Nilsson
If you agree player X can be found easily (assuming Nylander pans out), player Z can be almost anyone
The real hole is player Y
There are not really as many holes as you think.
Player Y is the key. Those don't just fall out of trees and we all know most defensemen that are drafted aren't ready for the show.
It doesn't make much sense to tank away another season.
Gionta has paid his dues he has said this is where he wants to finish his career, he is from Rochester, plus like Homie has said I have heard he might be back next season if he wants to play again. |

I'd be shocked if Kane is here next year. They want to trade him. Unless he gets in trouble again, he's gonna be moved for defense |

As long as he plays like he has been his stock will keep improving.
I really don't care if he is here or not. As it projects now he will be here though. Murray wants a lot for him still. |

Matthews scoring 4 goals in his debut was probably the worst thing he could have done while playing in Toronto for his career.
He does have 20 points in 26 games, that is nothing to scoff at though.
But man Laine... |
