Where the advance metrics fail you, yet again. The Leafs played a bad first period, as a team. In the 2nd and 3rd periods the Nylander-Matthews-Hyman line was good. Result in 2 goals, one of the player in which Nylander didn't get a point but made the whole play happen. Matthews Was in front on that goal, in layers with Hyman who got the tip for the goal. Also, look at the pass Bozak made to JVR for his. That was sick, you can't calculate chemistry. Those 2 lines have it.

This is actually where the eye-test fails you. Those were two excellent plays. But overall, the Leafs didn't play a good game. Don't get blinded by the memorable plays and forget about the other 56 minutes.

Bozak is a good offensive player, but the Leafs are still building and he's never going to be worth more. They should trade him right now so they can give Nylander his own line and so they can but AM with JVR.

Serious question: is there another team in the NHL that doesn't play their best wing and centre as a combo?

I totally agree, but te Oilers and Canucks would probably be pretty mad if they weren't though.

The Blackhawks. Anisomv centers Kane. Toews with Hossa.

Good call.

One reason for that though is that if you don't shelter Kane's minutes then he isn't good at all.

Ovi and Backs have been split up most of the year, though it's debateable if Ovi is the Caps' best winger.

"Sheltering minutes" coming from the guy that says zone starts and quality of competition doesn't matter because it evens out over the course of the season. The hypocrisy is so real.

Didn't you write something a few weeks ago about how people shouldn't use adblockers because the advertisements pay for the site? Now you don't like advertisements? Maybe it was someone else.

Why do you think everything is an either/or statement?

This isn't hypocritical.

I know zone starts and quality of competition don't really matter, in general, over a full season. That isn't my opinion.

That doesn't mean that coaches shouldn't make game-to-game, shift-to-shift matchups. It doesn't mean all players are equal.

It doesn't mean that there are not anomalies and doesn't mean that that goes for every player.

It just means that for the most part, a player is what his stats say regardless of where or who he plays with.

I don't understand why this is a difficult concept for people to accept. Also, you really ought to try understanding what a hypocrite is.

Yes I did write that and I stand my it. Ads are a necessary evil. Doesn't mean I have to like them. If you can think of another model for making money on the internet with something other than annoying ads, you could be a billionaire.

Personally, I find marketers even more atrocious than ads, but they all suck.

Coyotes have hired John Chayka, and he's been great. I think new ownership and no Maloney take them out of the category of poorly run teams.

You're projecting the future, as of right now, the Coyotes and Avalanche are almost as poorly run as the Canucks.

Well the Avalanche have their chance tonight playing the leafs with a goalie who has never played an NHL game and quite frankly hasn't been good lately in the AHL. It's not like the leafs superior defense is going to bail him out.

You have an pretty small sample size calling Chaska great. Did they move out of bottom place or something. Terrible organization that has been kept afloat by the league. BRUTAL.

Sort of a bad example because they play Crosby with Hornqvist, while Kessel plays with Malkin. All of those guys are awesome.

I think Hornqvist is shooting like 2% or something crazy this year.

I don't agree. I watch the Coyotes closer than almost anyone, and I really think their organization has lept forwards by light years in the last year.

I am not biased either, I'd have, and possibly did, call them the worst run franchise in the NHL as of the day before the day they fired Don Maloney.

But new owners, Tippett, Chayka, I think they're on the right track. While this may not be reflected in the on-ice results just yet, the Coyotes have OEL, DeAngleo, Chychrun, Crouse, Rieder, Strome, Domi, Duclair, Perlini, Dvorak, Keller, Fischer, MacInnnis etc.

No team has anything close to that besides the Leafs.

Ok James. Back to the original statement on Kane being split up from Toews so that he can be "sheltered" and that he "isn't good" playing with Toews. Here are some statistics for you (These stats are all 5 on 5, from 2007 - present/ The Toews/Kane era):

Playing with Toews, here are Kane's numbers:
GF/60: 3.51
GA/60: 2.42
GF%: 59.1
CF/60: 60.2
CA/60: 44.93
CF%: 57.3

Here are his numbers over the same time period without Toews:
GF/60: 2.66
GA/60: 2.38
GF%: 52.8
CF/60: 56.43
CA/60: 50.68
CF%: 52.7

http://stats.hockeyanalys...ue&season=2007-16&sit=5v5

Clearly he plays much better with Toews, Coach Q splits them up because it causes matchup problems for the other teams. Kane has no need to be "sheltered" by being on the second line.

I'm not really surprised because Toews, like Bergeron, makes everyone better. But they still shelter Kane and pretty much always have. I am sure it also has to do with spreading the wealth, so to speak. So you're not wrong.

But Kane is an atrocious defensive player, and human being.
