OK I need a few of you beard wearing hipster IT types to tell me if I'm crazy.

My current TimeWarner cable bill is $210/mo. We need that to cover internet and all the essential cable TV {MSG, HBO, CNN, FOX, Bloomberg, HGTV, Bravo, Cartoon, Food, major OTA networks}. We also have a whole house DVR, with three digital sets at 1080p. I have a subscription to Amazon Prime that we use to send stuff to my daughter at college and other gifts to family around the country. We're keeping that, cause the boy will go to school as soon as she graduates.

My current internet is 30 Mbps. I can double that to 60Mbps, get rid of the cable package and the HDTV boxes, and reduce my cable bill to $60/mo.

With the faster speed, I can get 1 Roku Streaming Stick, and two Roku's Express. If I combine the existing Amazon Prime with SlingTV and NetFlix subscription, I can cover every thing except the OTA Networks and the Sabres. NHLtv will allow me to subscribe to the Sabres ($50/yr), and if I get a VPN subscription ($100) a year I'll never get blacked out. I need an OTA antenna card for the networks.

All this rolled together every month is $60 (internet); $35 (Sling) $12 (Netflix) and $15 (annualized NHLtv w/VPN). That's $122/mo - or $90/mo less than current. One time hardware cost is $70 (Streaming stick comes free with Roku subscription, two Expresses at $30/each and $10 for the antenna) so it pays for itself first month.

What am I missing? Can an old dude who can post Youtube videos and gifs manage the set up for this system?

I have Verizon 150/150 internet which cost $100 and DirecTV Premier Package for $97 which has every channel they have including premiums. Time Warner just kinda sucks!

Came to Nashville from Detroit in the Legwand deal if I remember correctly...

Not true. They do send people out, it's just not their first priority a lot of the time. Also, what you're technically doing right now (if you are indeed still receiving service after asking to have it disconnected) is cable theft. Just an FYI.

Also said that we could use the line as an Antenna, that is the only reason i know it works. Then when i still got the 1-70 channels on top of the HD Digital locals, i called them back and they said there is no feed to my line and whatever channels im getting that its good for me!

I worked there. I know how it works. Whoever you talked to is an idiot. They do send people out. But you don't need to be home so it doesn't impact you in any way. It's just a trap that gets put on the line for your house. Some of them are on the house and some are on the pole. Just depends on where you are.

Being that you're getting those channels, they haven't trapped your line. You shouldn't be getting them. Most likely, whoever took your equipment (as well as made the changes in the system to your service) didn't schedule for the tech to come out and put the trap on.

Feel free to use it as long as you'd like, but technically if they ever figured it out, they could come after you for theft of service. They probably wouldn't, but they could. I wouldn't go around advertising to people that it works that way, because it's not supposed to and you've gotten lucky so far. They'll figure it out eventually though.

CNET Says roku kicks Fire Stick's ASS. But I never met any CNET guy. what is your experience.

I believe you are in the Rochester area if that is the case I am in Fairport and for a while I was setting up firesticks for people in Rochester (until it became a second job). In a lot of ways, probably. Cable theft is one of those things they decide at random times to do something about. Very similar to the whole illegal downloading of music/movies. The punishments probably aren't the same though. Typically, they seem to only tend to prosecute the people who repeatedly do it (tampering with the traps/lines and things like that on multiple occasions).

Most likely if they realize a trap wasn't put on like it should have been at some point, they'll just come and put it on and all of a sudden you won't get the channels anymore.

I wasn't trying to be confrontational at all, just wanted to make sure you knew that it doesn't technically work that way, so telling someone else to do that might not have the same result. That's all.
