I had no idea Palmieri was going to explode like that last year.
That said, he only went for a 2nd and a conditional 3rd, and it's the sort of buy low and hope to get lucky move that getting Derrick Pouilot would be from the Penguins that Broads suggested yesterday.
Everyone will point to the Saad trade as the one.
For Saad, CBJ gave up Dano, who at the time was thought of to have a high ceiling due to his brief NHL play the prior season, and Anismov as the key pieces.
This was also a cap move for the Hawks.
That means the idea of Myers going there was toast. Ditto someone like Ennis.
Would Armia have been looked at it with as much promise as Dano, at that time? Probably not.
Adding in one of the 1st round picks from the 2015 is a no brainer as part of the deal, but what else did they have?
Having just landed Eichel and trading for O'Reilly, would you have included Reinhart in the deal for Saad, knowing he too was going to cost between $5M-$6M?
Would both of the other 2015 first round picks been enough to entice Chicago?
Maybe, but it seems like they needed/wanted at least one NHL player and one NHL ready player.
The first below is the actual trade and the second is my best guess at what it would have taken to beat what they got from CBJ.
To Columbus Blue Jackets Brandon Saad
Michael Paliotta
Alex Broadhurst To Chicago Blackhawks Artem Anisimov
Marko Dano
Jeremy Morin
Corey Tropp
4th round pick in 2016
To Buffalo Sabres Brandon Saad
Michael Paliotta
Alex Broadhurst
To Chicago Blackhawks
Zemgus Girgensons
Justin Bailey
Marcus Foligno

I bet Toronto is dangerously close to Arizona, or maybe even worse.
They truly cratered. |

They need cap space and wanted value. sure we would need to add and it would seem like an overpayment. But put saad in this top 6 and you've got a legit shot at the playoffs instead of this 09 esque false hope run we got going (sorry not sorry) |

People are still complaining we have Kane and still complaining about the trade and still think Murray is shopping Kane, and he isn't. I can go on for hours about this crap. |

My point was I'm not sure Chicago would have taken what I put together over what CBJ offered mainly because we didn't have an Anisimov to put in the trade. |

I like Murray. He's solid. He had a bunch of bullets and took his shot with Kane. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say he missed. |

Oh i see, yea i can understand that. My counterpoint to that however would be that exactly how much worse would this team be if they dont make that trade? Not as in keeping stafford and Myers but moving them in a different deal, lets say two separate deals that only brought back draft picks or something.
Would they really be that much worse without Kane and Bogosian? I feel like we'd be at or near the same position but with 10 mil+ in cap space and the assets to make a deal for the top 6 without having to worry about being too close to the cap. |

They would not, totally agree.
Nobody they got back outside of O'Reilly, and McGinn (for the most part), made a consistent difference to the team. |

He didn't miss with Kane, he got rid of players he didn't want and a soft D man he didn't want. Kane is a solid player and isn't someone you just trade away but for some reason it's an everyday conversation on this blog about the Kane trade over and over and over and over again. Teams call Murray about Kane, he doesn't make calls to other teams about him. |

There was a lot of talk early into this rebuild about how draft picks are long shots (and for the most part they are) and that the decision to trade from that surplus to acquire nhl talent is a better way to go (which it usually is) but as a general rule the nhl talent coming back has to be....you know...good
It just seems funny to me that with the exception of ROR all of the players everyone here is happy with are "freebies".
Okposo, Ristolainen, Eichel, Guhle, McCabe, few of the rochester forwards and yea sure ill throw reinhart in there too. zero assets were given up for these players.
A huge number of assets were shipped out and it brought back one core player. one. |

He missed 89. He traded assets for a player thats only effective when he's placed on the third line. He was right to get rid of "Darcy's trash". He was wrong to identify Kane and Bogosian as the players to get in return. |

He did not miss, he set out to get bigger and stronger and he wanted a power forward and he got that in Kane, he did not miss, people need to let it go. |

Well as long as he wanted that and not goal scoring or any sort of meaningful production then yes i can agree he didnt miss.
I really liked Kane, still kind of do but I think they should move on especially if offers are coming in. |

didn't you say teams were asking about him? I assume at some point someone will make an offer. Hes not "trying to trade him" but if a worthwhile offer comes in hit accept and don't look back. |

I'm sensing a softening in the #neverTRADErs; now it's the bullets should have been shot but more accurately. Remember at the time Myers was a heap of crap, Stafford ditto and a pending UFA and Armia was non-producing AHLer; the crying is most about a 2nd rounder and a 25th overall 1st, nice pellets that could do some damage but still..
I wonder if the Capitals fans would have cried over trading some players from the 74-75 crap team as much Sabres fans do about this trade? |

I think at the time armia was close to ppg in the ahl but i dont remember for sure. The Canucks offered 24th overall for myers that summer. Assuming you do that deal, that prospect, plus that first, second and armia gives you some decent ammo. I dont miss any of the guys that were moved i just dont like what he brought back. |

Never said offers just calls and why should he hit accept ? because most don't want him here because of what happened outside of the rink ?

Funny, I never knew that trade landed us Eichel, until people realized how unimpressive Zach Nogoalsian is |
