The phone wasn't free. If you figure out the difference, it's pretty much the same. They charge $40 a month per line if you're on a contract or $20 if you're not. If your current phone is working fine, just stick with it for now to keep your bill down some. Like I said, mine's $155, and $30 of that is for my phone.
- HonkFortheGoose

I think I'm leaning towards this. Just keeping the old iPhone I have and just pay the $20/month.

That's an option too. I have a Smart TV in the room I have the extra box. Also need to buy my own modem.
- Pairo11

Also, call and tell them you're going to switch. They'll give you discount of some sort (don't take the first option, as it's always just a little bit off). Just be a bit pushy, but not a jerk. They have options. Also find out what level internet you have, because they're always trying to upsell you the faster one, but I can tell you that I've had just the Standard for years and it works just fine. No issues with multiple people streaming/surfing the web at the same time.

1st year in a rebuild though. They're ahead of Buffalo already and will be for years. IMO.

They are gonna need a math expert to figure out the cap in a year or 2

How many TVs do you have boxes on? Because the TWC app that's available for Roku is great. Just like having a box hooked up but you don't have to pay the monthly rental fee.
- HonkFortheGoose

I really need to talk to retention. I'm currently paying $148 for cable and internet a month without a box, including the Sports Package and a modem lease. I use a CableCard and run it through to a dedicated computer (2.50 a month to rent the Tuning Adapter) hooked to my TV.

Does the Roku App have DVR capabilities?

Yeah, I've been doing the dance with them for 2 years. I get a GREAT deal for 6 months and then call again for a new deal.

Unfortunately, no. It's more or less like having one of the standard HD boxes on the TV. Honestly though, I don't DVR very much these days. Everything is available On Demand and I have a Hulu account. Plus all the networks have their own apps that allow you to stream most of the shows the next day and all you need for those to work is a valid cable subscription.

Unfortunately, it's like that with all the providers. It's just part of how things work. They're always running specials to bring in new customers, but barely do anything to help out the loyal ones. To be quite honest, the only way to keep your costs down consistently is to just switch from provider to provider every year or two. And that just entails a whole different set of issues/aggravation that you have to deal with in getting new service installed.

If I wasn't such a big sports fan, I could easily cut the cord and just use the different streaming services, but that's not possible if you want a consistently decent quality picture for sports broadcasts.

DVR capability doesn't come from the Roku it comes from your content provider. Sling has it in limited capacity, I think, but Direct TV Now has it virtually unlimited.

My thinking, though, is that with all the OnDemand capabilities that the entire concept of a DVR is going the way of the 8 track.

There are ways by getting a proxy IP to "trick" NHL Gamecenter, etc. to think you are somewhere else. It borders on illegal, but nobody seems to really want to do anything about it. I've never really messed with it, and it sounds like a pain, but with the way cable costs are, it might be worth looking into.

I know. But that's much more hassle than I feel like dealing with. Way too much to have to tinker with and no guarantees. I would end up frustrated and throw something when I want to watch a game and all of a sudden it's not working.

The likelihood of that happening with my cable subscription is much less.

I just finished looking into it. A subscription to NHL Gamecenter and the most secure proxy subscription (to avoid Sabres blackouts arising from MSG local exclusivity rights) goes for about $10/mo combined. There are cheaper proxies.

Even with the most secure proxy, I'm at around $70 month cheaper.

I think I knew that. A better way to ask the question (which you answered) was how do you handle the lack of a DVR with the Streaming Device.

I had dumped DirecTV because of price, but I do need to keep an eye on DirecTV Now.

I would like to see more out of a 2nd overall pick, but I'm told that only miserable people expect greatness.
- buffalofan19

This is not aimed at you as I'm only using this as the latest comment on this topic of conversation.

Previously, I posted my findings on top 5 picks and the average development time it took each pick to reach their own respective full potentials going back to the 1995 draft.

This morning, I looked at number 2 picks specifically from 1995 to 2011 (using number 2 picks from 2012 to current does not allow the normal amount of development time to provide a full picture).

Below is what I found for number 2 picks from 1995-2011 regarding their max production, minimum production, average production, and peak average production.

Position Max PROD Min. PROD Ave. PROD PEAK Ave.
Forward 82.8 54.0 63.2 67.3
Defense 46.3 27.3 32.8 36.4

Interesting that the average production and average peak production are between 63-67 points.

The two least regarded, as I would classify them, of the number 2 picks that are forwards would be Legwand and Bobby Ryan. Perhaps some would count Jordan Staal in that grouping as well.

How many would be satisfied if Reinhart ended up averaging 65 points for his production annually? Doesn't seem like many, and yet that is what the numbers say is the average.

The proxy idea is genius. I'm paying like 150 for cable to watch the Sabres (and American pickers)

To add to this, the entire list of forwards taken number 2 overall between 1995 & 2011 is below, listed in order.

Patrick Marleau, David Legwand, Daniel Sedin, Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza, Eric Staal, Evgeni Malkin, Bobby Ryan, Jordan Staal, James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Seguin, Gabriel Landeskog
