I don't know for certain, but I think it is one of those things that's happening more and more in the world where the rules can't keep up with the technology.

The exclusivity rights are for Cable, I believe, not for streaming. In a nod to it's member club's obligations, the NHL makes Gamecenter's rules such that you can't stream Gamecenter from an IP address within the exclusivity area, but theres nothing as far as I know that precludes accessing the stream from an IP address in a different location. And that's exactly what the proxy does: it permits you to access the stream from a different IP address.

This is an entirely routine use of technology in today's world. Many many corporations have network centers located at considerable distance from their various office locations. Centralizing the tech hub in a remote location permits them to locate their servers in areas where rent and salaries are lower (driving down back room admin costs) and - for companies in NY Boston, DC and other major metropolises - that are less likely terror targets.

Yeah, my company's server is in Dallas. My biggest fear (other than legal) is having to connect and disconnect to the proxy repeatedly for services that you need the local IP address for. This may not be as necessary (if at all), but at one time it was. I really need to look back into this.
