Kulikov doesn't have to be protected because he's a pending UFA. You're not going to see many expansion eligible guys get extensions before expansion. Also if you're not thinking about expansion only a year before you should be fired. You need to be thinking and acting on it as soon as it's set in stone. Having said that, I don't think that's the reason the trade was made, it's just a bonus.
