They were booing the fact that the Carubba Collision was not the McCabe Laine hit, which they explained on the broadcast was due to Laine being hurt and nobody knowing his condition. - kingcong39
Was there and yes, that was why. They never showed a replay and people were eager to see it again too. Hope he is alright, but it was a clean great hit by McCabe (mostly evident by his injury/cut too, that it was not an elbow or shoulder that squarely hit Laine in the head).
What's up guys? Had a busy day. Recorded the game and watched it around 5. A very roller coaster emotion type game. I was ready to just give up after the second but I'm glad I stuck with it through the 3rd. Got production from struggling offensive players in Gionta, Girgensons and Foligno which was really nice. Lehner played just okay. But some of those goals against fall on a surprisingly sub par Risto. I'm hoping this kicks in a winning streak. Seriously considering buying tixs for Flyers game Tuesday.
Side note. Read about the Cal Petersen concerns. This is a bold statement but I fully stand by it. If Murray can't sign this kid and he pulls a Reily or Vessey he deserves to be fired. You can't let the potential future franchise goaltender walk. I know Murray loves Lehner but Petersen has the potential to be great and he needs to do whatever he can to sign him. - bluengold12
The first goal is partly on Risto, always take the pass away, really duped Lehner. The second goal on PP with Stafford, he came to the net from a stand still and got 3(!!) shots before it went in, where was the D? And the Armia goal, was just a nice play by Armia, but he should have gotten that save. I don't think he does no wrong, but the better teams in the league rarely let their goalie face situations like that. I was at the game and we almost left with 18 minutes left in 3rd, really glad we did not. Very strong 3rd.
Cal, I don't know how Murray does not get that done. Nilsson on a 1 year deal is pretty evident of that, leaving Ullmark in Buffalo next year and Cal can anchor the Rochester Americans. We will see how it turns out, but Murray is not dumb, he does like Lehner, but he can't just give good players away (what he says about trading deadline players with contracts ending), this applies with Cal.

Jake McCabe is slowly becoming an all around solid player. The fact that he clearly knows all the rules regarding hits, which most players probably don't, sticks out to me. He's smart. We need more smart players. I like smart players.

Stripes's thoughts:
That game could turn out to be a season changer. Looks like Bylsma might have the locker room after all. He called timeout and was very heated and the team responded.
McCabe was brutal most of the game, the hit was great and all but he was not. He was terrible the first two periods. Kudos to waking them up but he needs to be smarter if he wants to be Risto's wingman in the future.
Maybe Foligno is a guy worth protecting at the expansion draft. He is turning into a very solid 3rd liner and doesn't look out of place playing with Eichel at the moment. Yes I want better for Eichel but Marcus could be that McGinn type that can play up when needed.
For as terrible as Franson was in period one and two he was really good in the third. More periods like that and Murray may get a second for him at the deadline.
Lehner might have given up 3 goals on 35 shots but he kept the Sabres alive until they woke up. The Jets had 26 shots on goal halfway thru the second period. He made some big saves and bailed out a few teammates (Kane) for their sloppy d zone coverage. Loved him wanting a piece of Buff.
Kane was trying to do too much against his former team and it showed. I hope he gets back to what was working, play a simple hard nosed game.
Sam is quietly on a nice little run, 9 points in his last 9 games. He is up to a 50 point pace.
Lastly I am not concerned about the Peterson thing. Who knows what he will do in his professional career? Plus with the Sabres probably losing at least one goalie either expansion draft of free agency there is a spot for him to start in Rochester next season.
5 out of a possible 6 points is good but we've been here before with this team. It's time they win the next 2 or 3 in a row.

Stripes, good solid objective post. I don't disagree with any of the above except I don't think the Sabres lose a goalie prospect. There are too many teams with two excellent goalies that need to be protected - see Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay for reference. If I am Vegas, I am taking one of those guys ahead of Ulmark who is a middling goalie prospect at this time.

If Vegas takes a goalie from Buffalo it's probably Ullmark...
If they don't I think Nilsson is gone and Ullmark is up in Buffalo next year with Lehner. Peterson is the starter in Rochester next year.

For the record I'm not defending the Lehner trade. But I am defending the player. Whether he is worth a first round pick or not is a mute point. But the goaltender himself is playing just fine.
So Gerbe again I'm defending the player not the trade.

Goalies just don't come in and play. When they're fresh out of Junior/college. Matt Murray is an exception and it still took him a full year in the AHL after 4 full junior(OHL. Probably the best league in the CHL) seasons. And Petersen wants to come in and start after 3 years at Notre Dame which is in a poopty conference? It's just not going to happen. I'm not saying he's not going to be a good goalie, what I'm saying is that we don't know, and you can't be held hostage by a guy that was a 5th round pick to begin with. Andrew Hammond was undrafted and it took him to his 2 3/4 season after he finished 4 years at Bowling Green. He was 26 when he had that crazy 20-1-2 run for the Sens. He had 35 mins of NHL experience leading up to that.
Precedence says he's in no position to demand anything, and there's also a precedent that he'll be 25-26 before he's any good.
I'm all for him if he wants to come in and earn it. Rushing players results in almost systematic killing of the players psyche. 60% of the time it does it all the time. Go to the team that drafted you. It's only 2 years in this case, maybe 1 if you stay for your senior year(I forgot what the cut off age is for a one year ELC), and you likely wouldn't have played much anyway, spending most of the time in the AHL. Then when you're done with your apprenticeship and you still don't like it, you ask out. - Wetbandit1
I think you misinterpreted what I said. I don't think Cal or myself believe he can come in right away and be a starting NHL goaltender. I think all he and his adviser want to know is that he has a chance to come in and be the franchise goalie in the next few years should his play improve. If Murray tells him that Lehner and only Lehner is that guy and that at best Petersen can be his reliable back up then I will be very disappointed. Cal has the make up t be a leader and terrific goaltender. You can bash his conference all you want. The fact is Notre Dame has legit NHL prospects come out of it and it named its goalie the captain which just doesn't happen. The guy has played a ridiculous amount of games in a row and is showing his resilience.
Again - Not expecting him to start in Buffalo right away. I think he just wants assurance he can be the guy here should his play back it up. And his adviser and him seem to not be sure based on what Murray has said about Murray in the past. Which I think is wrong.

I'm sure that Lehner is a better goalie than Nilsson but why do I feel more confidence in the team when Nilsson plays ? #'s are similar but Lehner just seems to fight the puck so damn much. Plus the whole shoot out issue.
I just feel like Murray is force feeding us Lehner and Nilsson isn't getting a fair shot. I wish they'd ride the hot hand.

I think its been pretty obvious that in the Sabres organization, the coach, not the GM determines who is going to play on the active roster. Just my opinion though.

To be fair they gave Nilsson the net against the Rangers after a few days off where they could have just went back to Lehner, they won so Nilsson played against Chicago as well.

Where is all this talk of Cal Petersen holding out coming from? Did he or his Agent release a statement of such, or is this purely speculation?
