Where is all this talk of Cal Petersen holding out coming from? Did he or his Agent release a statement of such, or is this purely speculation?
- IonSabres

Speculation but Kris Baker has sources whom he seems confident in.

"Here's what we know: Cal Petersen likely to exit NCAA, can sign a two-year ELC shortly after his season. Will it be with Buff? Maybe."
"If I'm Petersen's agent, I want to know if Sabres are going to commit to a 25-year-old Robin Lehner long term."
"worth noting that I'm not doing my job if only looking at it from Buffalo-based lens. Have to consider all perspectives and situations."
"it's an evolving situation or as CNN would like to say "fluid", but I trust my info and Buff very much alive in the process"

This is from a guy watching Notre Dame game
@SabresProspects watching the ND game. They said Peterson might go the Vessey route. Any thoughts?

So what we know is Bakers speculation/rumblings he's hearing plus the national guys at Notre Dame broadcast apparently said something which I do not know the exact wording of but would like to

This is the very definition of a tempest in a teapot.

Any kid and any agent, competing for any position on the team, is going to be told the true situation. "You will be given a fair opportunity to win the spot." Murray may even say "It's Robin's job right now, but you'll be given a fair shot." But we really don't have anything other than Lehner hate and Murray distrust to suggest Murray is going to block anybody else from taking the job.

Here's the bottom line, Murray chose Lehner and wants to see whether his investment will pay off. Last year he was prevented from doing that by Lehners injury. CJ played well in his absence but didn't definitively outplay Lehner. The same has been true this year for Nilsson, he's played well, but he has not definitively outplayed Lehner. As the Chicago game showed us, they're willing to play Nilsson when he looks sharp and wins. He's not being held out of games.

I know there is huge anti-Lehner sentiment in Buffalo, but right now he's king of the hill and - as he would be under any GM in the NHL - he will stay there until he gets knocked off. If Peterson is really that amazing, he ought to be licking his lips to get a chance to topple such a weak incumbent.

For the price given up, the question shouldn't be "did the backup goaltender definitely outplay the guy we gave up the first rounder for?" It should be "did the guy we gave up a first rounder for definitively outplay the backup?" And right now, the answer definitely isn't "yes".

The Sabres aren't operating that way, or so it seems. If I am Petersen, and I have the leverage to test the FA market like Vesey did, he absolutely should do it.
