If we used the pick, it would likely have been on a defenseman. Not either of those guys. The team didn't need another center. - adambuffalo
Evidence by the fact that we passed over a d-man last summer to take a forward? I think he would have gone BPA. |

Sort of, you're very close.
My issue lies within the middle step. I believe management chose to spend a poop ton of assets too early but the bigger problem is that they spent it on areas that a good rebuilding team gets through the draft OR in creative signings/trades, NOT OVERPAYMENTS
Take for example the often argued trades of Kane/Bogo, Lehner and even ROR. Using our division rivals as an example here because they'll help illustrate my point.
Nikita Zaitsev was practically unknown a year ago, literally. Never heard of him, until Friedman mentioned the leafs were signing him. This year, his first year in north america, has numbers worthy of being a second pair d-man. all at an ELC cap hit. His slot on the leafs is where Bogosian slots here.
The role of second line centre and shelterer for top draft pick(ROR's spot) held by a leafs draft pick, Nazem Kadri. Despite being a poop head, great two way game, signed to a reasonable contract.
James Van Riemsdyk, from the old group yes. Acquired at his lowest point (buy low) for Luke Schenn (aka the leafs tyler myers). No additional prospects, picks involved. The leafs have not only gotten more scoring out of him than we have with Kane, they will likely get major value for him at the deadline should they chose to move him.
Freddy Andersen. Rough start in his first month as a leaf, Vezina numbers since. Acquired using the 30th pick and a 2nd rounder. Signed to a pricey cap hit but hey, they dont have too many burdening contracts.
Addressing these secondary areas through the draft or creative/smart moves has now put the leafs not only in a higher spot in the standings but in a better position to address the exact same needs we do as they have far more cap space and assets to do so. - Sabresfan-365
Hold up though. Kadri was drafted in 2009. JVR qcquired 2012. They are not part of the Leafs rebuild - they were already in house.
So you're pointing to Zaitsev - which we might have duplicated with Guhle (if we let him play here), and Andersen who was a deal that looks a lot like a much more expensive Lehner with similar numbers?
Of course the Leafs will have more assets available if two of their key players didn't have to be acquired and were already in house. |

Noway Jose. Don't like it, love it. I think Lynn would mean T-Mobile stays. If it blows up, Mayfield or the USC kid will fall into our laps without having to trade assets to move up next year. Maybe we can draft Watson this year for the hell of it too. |

From the BN....
Marcus Foligno-Eichel-Brian Gionta
William Carrier-Ryan O’Reilly-Kyle Okposo
Evander Kane-Reinhart-Justin Bailey
Nicolas Deslauriers-Zemgus Girgensons-Matt Moulson
I say swap eichel and Reinhart, scratch D-low and get a kid up from rochester.
Could actually be a decent 4 lines. |

I'm not a fan. I want a shake up. My top choice of guys we interviewed is Richard but I love the idea of a McDermott McCoy team with McCoy being a QB whispering OC - bluengold12
Lynn's offense was quite successful, and a lot of teams took notice. There's no reason to think he can't be successful here or anywhere else for that matter. My glass is usually half full.
Hire the right people, get good results. McDermott could be as, more or less successful than Lynn. They're both fresh looks when it comes to head coaching. If Lynn hires a pair of quality coordinators, we might actually look like a team that can beat the (frank)ing Jets and Dolphins without squirting poop all over the field. |

Girouxdini is back! Must've been getting upset that Eichelfield was coming for the best disappearing act in the league. Do need to watch out for the Wayne Train and Read would be a 50 goal scorer if he played every game vs. the Sabres.

Also, I have yet to see an under the radar type FA or trade work out in our favor yet.
Where are the bargain signees like Marchessault, Sceviour, Zaistev, Stempniak, Parenteau, who could help the top 6/top 4 and do not cost Okposo money? - sbroads24
McGinn, who left to test the market and got Yahtzeed.
Also, every one of the back up goaltenders. |

Right the years are off with those two at the top. But they moved Luke Schenn who is worse than myers for him. a similar move to the kane trade but with far better/cheaper results.
Kadri i grant you too far back to make the comparison and i realized that after i posted, thats my bad.
Andersen, has far better numbers than lehner since around mid november i believe. |

Reinhart at 1 C. That worked well last time.
My guess is DLo sits for Carrier, Carrier plays 4LW when Ennis jumps back in. |

Fair enough, but this is the first round vs pick 51 onwards. Im not so sure Murray would have gone straight for a d-man if he believed there was someone better overall available. |

People should quit complaining about trading a 1st for Lehner (and Legwand that never gets mentioned). For as deep of a draft as '15 was, there were an awful lot of 1sts being traded. Would you guys complain if that 1st and our two 2nds were traded for Dougie Hamilton? How about that 1st and a 2nd for Griffin Reinhart? Maybe that 1st a defenseman and a goalie for Lucic? That 1st, a 3rd and Foligno for Brayden Coburn? The 1st and a D prospect for Sekara?
There are a lot of worse things we could have used that 1st for. - adambuffalo

Well obviously otherwise we wouldn't disagree
im tired and under caffeinated so im probably not getting my point across the way id like to so ill try and simplify.
We overpaid for players that good rebuilding teams get without overpaying for. That leaves them enough assets/cap space to overpay for in critical areas, such as a top pairing d-man.
leafs had guys in house, we had guys in house too. Maybe you make the ROR trade no matter what. But maybe you get creative/smarter when trying to add a winger mid pairing d-man? Maybe you look to europe like Toronto did.
Maybe you don't enter a goaltending market when its at its worst for buyers, maybe you wait a year. |
