if they had not moved phil and dion, they would be contending with the habs right now
- homiedclown

They wouldn't have two superstars + nylander ( I wouldn't consider him a star yet good player yes )

I know people hate stats, so I understand if this isn't something you or everyone agrees with, but most stats in general say this team is neither lucky or unlucky, they are right where they should be in the standings.

Mike Schopp did a segment on this yesterday after the game. Most metrics have this team well below average in a majority of categories as far as shots, 5 on 5 play etc.

Scoring chances for say otherwise, as does their SH%. I don't have them both offhand, but I know just a few weeks ago they were 3rd in scoring chances for. And their SH% was 7.3 or something.

Edit: I totally made up the 7.3, but I thought I saw that somewhere. But for sure we were 3rd in scoring chances for.

Don't forget Sam Bennett was the youngest in the draft

I get it, man. I really do. I get the bitterness, the inferiority complex, the refusal to face reality, etc. You've never won a cup, you've just suffered through 4 or 5 years of basement-dwelling, only to discover that you've botched the rebuild. Now you're watching the hated Leafs surpass you. And to top it all off, you have to listen to deafening Go Leafs Go chants in your own barn

But come on....we both know that, deep down, you don't truly believe what you wrote there. If your prospect pool is better than Toronto's, you'd better call every single respected hockey authority on earth to let them know. Because clearly they're all wrong

- AxlRose91

Haha, nice try, Chooch.

We started most of this season with a incomplete roster. Just recently we have gotten it healthy. Where could this team be if it had those games to form some chemistry ?
- cabin

So the Sabres have missed a lot of man games which has effected their team results, Toronto not so much.

Toronto is younger (25.7 to Sabres 26.2) but not by much. They have strong "rookies", but if you look at the details, they are not Matthews age rookies.

They are getting rookie support from Hyman (24 years old, but a 6th? round pick) and others similar. So my question / comment will be is it sustainable? You see a lot of rookies have break out years and then come back to earth. Same could be said for our players, but they seem to have more unproven players playing really well. Where we have O'Reilly (proven), Kane (fairly proven), Okposo (proven) to back them up.

It will be interesting the next few years to see how these two progress / compete against each other. Hopefully we come out ahead, long term.

In the draft ? Or just sam in general?

I think Christian Dvorak will be better than both

right but this year for them is last year for us on the "blueprint"
- Sabresfan-365

Timing is everything. If we waited a year and everything else happened we'd have Laine and Eichel. But if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. If if if.

The Leafs were extraordinarily lucky. If we won the lotto and have McDavid you don't think we'd be higher? Look at Edmonton. I love Jack, but he's not McDavid. Jack is going to be Vanek+. Score a ton of goals, but also skate and pass well.

Any stats that take into account the Sabres team prior to Jack returning from injury are null and void.

Impress us with those same stats since he returned ONLY .................

I'll wait ...........

My point was, everyone seems (my take at least) that Toronto is wayyyy younger and it is surprising their turnaround. Sure their "rebuild" was short, even though they have not made the playoffs since the debacle against the Bruins (2010?), so we need to be patient too and not be too concerned with their turnaround.

when matthews, marner, brown, nylander, gauthier, carrick, and soshnikov are playing with the big club, they are no longer prospects

but don't worry, I am sure another bar will be offering free beer for leaf fans for their playoff games again this spring

Interesting, so I guess I was looking at preseason roster data and not with all the call ups (maybe) and all that. Cause when Ennis goes out and Carrier comes in, that is a couple years right there. (not to mention Guhle and other prospects subbing in).
