I get that. But the problem right now is that there's a pretty large gaping hole on defense and there's not much we can do to fill it right now due to not having any real resources available to make that kind of move now.

We do still have some to trade, not a ton but we do. Kane could be trade bait, Ennis if he ever stays healthy, Girgensons, obviously there are draft picks as well. If you're looking for a top 2 none of these guys will get you one but a top 4 is possible. At this point I think you ride the season out and see what happens with Guhle. Potentially teams might be willing to trade players before the expansion draft to not lose a guy for nothing.

We don't have the resources to really do that right now. The cupboard doesn't have a heck of a lot in it at the moment.

Normal teams do that. Teams don't normally have a ton of prospects to trade or players they don't want so they get rid of without creating a hole. Trading a piece means we open up a whole, but we need to have the pieces to replace it like normal teams do. If you trade a Kane you need to have Nylander or Bailey pick up the slack. If you trade Girgensons you need Larsson to take that role. If you trade Ennis you need Baptitste to play there. Time might not be right now, due to injuries and readiness but that's how you have to do it. Have to sell high on these players because you know you have pieces to replace them.

And as I have said before, sure the Leafs won the cup and the Sabres never did, however the Leafs never won a thing once the NHL had more than 6 teams. So basically the Leafs last won their division in 1967.
