I wonder if Matt Murray could be had for a reasonable price. Better than losing him in the expansion draft

Uh... There is no way Pittsburgh leaves him unprotected.

You're right with the no good, but not simply because he played for us before. It was because he stunk on Long Island, in Montreal, and in Minnesota. It's not as if we were the only team to conclude Vanek was done.

He's having a nice year this year, but it comes as a surprise to many people, not only Buffalo.

- Der Kaiser

He played pretty damn good in NY. In Minnesota he started fading but his worst year was "only" 41 points.

We could have gotten some good assets to take on the last year of his contract

I think Broads point is that Vanek is the kind of low cost, 1 year deal, or 2 years if it takes 2, that the Sabres, and other teams, should be making to fill out their rosters every season instead of signing guys like Moulson to long term high dollar deals.

That way, even if the player does not pan out, the deal is nothing of a concern beyond the current season.

Correct me if I am wrong on that Broads.

- kingcong39

I get that...but all i'm sayin' is that most couldn't wait to run him out of town and most didn't want him back no matter the dollars and term...he represented all that was hated about the core and most wanted to move on from that era

it's so typical...run him out of town, watch him produce, lament that he's no longer with the team, get angry because he's not on the team...

wash, rinse, repeat

It was not all goaltending. One horrible goal was let in, but so did the Leafs.

actually two, and Lehner looked awful on that goal by matthews

They have to protect Fluery. NMC

It seems very unlikely that anyone is going to trade for Fluery with his age, contract, play this year and knowing that they have to move him or they'll lose Murray

Parcells was wrong. You are what your shots towards the goal say you are!

are you referring to the wrong goal?

Matthews released that puck in about 1/3 of a second and went bar down. How is that Lehner's fault?

Murray (Tim) doesn't seem to take any chances on low risk/high reward type players. It is very frustrating when he blows his bounty on high risk moves but then will pass on a guy like Vanek or Rattie who carries almost zero risk

I think the point is that - with the benefit of hindsight, and the ability to flyspeck the entire league - its relatively easy to find the kind of low cost, 1 year deal, or 2 years if it takes 2, that the Sabres, and other teams, should be making to fill out their rosters every season instead of signing guys like Moulson to long term high dollar deals. For Christs sake, we did a simple little cheap deal with Franson and people foam at the mouth over getting him out of here.

With the benefit of hindsight, its also easy to criticize the Moulson deal (or for that matter the Vanek deal with Minnesota, which they themselves bought out).

yeah, Matthews is awesome...won't deny it...but there's no reason for him to be on his knees that deep in the net

If you hang around here much you will learn that just about everything that's going wrong with this season is somehow Lehner's fault.

Usually pachla doesn't play that card.

It will be interesting to see who are the bargain basement value pickups from the forward and defense lists below based on performance and advanced stats from this current season.

Feels like there are some obvious candidates.

Look, the team dropped a turd last night - and we lost by one (frank)ing goal. And I'm as tired of it as all of you - probably moreso because I actually expected good things and I am dealing with letting go of those expectations.

But as tired as I am of the team's losing, I am fed the (frank) up with all of the willingness to second guess every move and always find the misses to be "criminal" and "obvious" and "drunk."

For all of the glorification of the Vanek signing, the Red Wings are in the toilet with us.

I don't. But guess what, he cost nothing to get here, and will probably net an asset as a return.

Like people on here have said for YEARS, and Homie and DD can back me up on this.

You can find wingers everywhere, and for cheap that will produce.

WE don't for some reason. We trade multiple assets for them, or sign them to 7 year deals.

For the price of just Okposo, we could have Marchessault+Vanek+ Gagner. All 3 guys with similar production this year.

And I really like Okposo. He's a good player. And this isn't me criticizing him.
