No. They would need to shore up the D before looking for a high priced scoring winger. Despite the success so far this season, this Leafs team still has a ways to go before they can think about moving draft picks for that last piece to put them over the edge.
The 1st they got from Pitt was flipped for Freddie Andersen, and that blah prospect is still only 20 years old and an AHL all star. - 1979AD
But he wouldn't be all that expensive - those idiots at MLSEL agreed to retain some of his salary when they traded him to Pittsburgh.
So we wouldn't have to pay his full salary...
...oh wait....
Damn. |

Damn, that's a really good question.
The problem with Kessel was always timing - he was the right guy at the wrong time. He was abso-franking-lutely the right guy at the right time for Pittsburgh.
Now that Toronto is looking better, Kessel for a 1st and blah prospect is tempting, but at the end of the day, I'd say it is still too early in Toronto's rebuilding cycle. It's great that we are in a playoff position after 42 games, but we are still nowhere near that "one piece away" from being a legit contender.
So the answer is "no", but damn, you made me think about it.
As crazy as it sounds (and I know most Leafs fans will disagree with me on this), I'd rather have Phaneuf back. At a lower price, obviously. |

I think Carrier looked good last night. I wouldn't be surprised if Foligno is left unprotected or even traded at the deadline and Carrier is protected. Foligno has put in some goals. You know what some say about Kane? Sell high. He has never tickled my fancy |

one thing that may have been overlooked. if comparing the two rebuilds is toronto fired all its scouts. and hired winning owners in the CHL. anyone can draft an eichel or mathews. Its those 5th and 7th rounders that turn out that make the difference. Just look at tampa and the ducks. If you know the leafs farm system you see alot of these later picks excelling. Friends that happen to hate the leafs even admit this to me. The leafs have some bright spots coming down the pipe. The sabres are not as bad as its fans are making out. God you guys eat your own. I do think however the sabres should be a little more patient and not traded for or signed some your veterans. - ziffles

Bingo. Thats why you maximize your chances by accumulating as many picks as you can during the building phase (which the sabres did but then promptly gave away)
i think big trades can work out for a team even when the value is off but those moves have to come when the core of the team is more or less already in place, can't do them 5 months before you've landed your star player - Sabresfan-365
this guy deserves a job in sabres front office. started buying before you knew what you were selling. Instead of getting the best fits, you just sent futures for whatever was out there. Leafs could have gotten defensemen with their assets, they just dont like the price and whats out there. will wait it out until proper fit. Accumulate until you NEED to sell assets |

Jeepers, is that really what you Sabres fans do?
You guys are embarrassing.
Here in Leafs Nation, we run a guy out of town, watch him produce, lament that he's no longer with the team, and then blame others for running him out of town, swearing that we knew all along he was a superstar...

1. Patrick Mahomes — Quarterback — Texas Tech
Rising all the way from number three to number one, Patrick Mahomes appears to be the hot prospect out there right now. Depending on the direction of the Buffalo Bills offense next season, the team may or may not move on from Tyrod Taylor. That said, the team still needs a long term replacement.
While some may be pushing for Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson — someone I feel is a second or third round pick — a player I really adore is Patrick Mahomes. A gunslinger in every sense of the word, Mahomes would bring a new perspective to the Buffalo Bills offense.
Using the run game to help in Mahomes development, adding the former Red Raider would open deep play avenues not seen under Tyrod. If a passing game is the way towards the playoffs, Mahomes is the guy needed in Buffalo. - SABRES 89

actually murray went after exactly the types of players he wanted
kane--hard skating powerforward with skill
o'reilly--an upper echelon, two way forward with skill and faceoff acumen
bogo--big, strong d-man who could skate and put up a few points
lehner--big goalie who he felt could be a no. 1
all were in their mid-20's and players he considered young-vets and all were brought in to take some heat off the youngis...they became available and he traded away the pieces he needed to land them |

Just as strange: over in the Leafs thread the last few pages are about healthy diet choices as opposed to who to fire/trade/put on waivers. |

Where buffalo and Toronto are in respect to each other really isn't the issue. Pacha hit it on the head that Pegulas have been sold on the wrong people running their organizations. They've bought flashy fold good and run these companies on emotions, not strong hockey/ football/business decisions
