Give them the late 1st and a prospect and call it a day
- mdw7413

They'll want a rostered player controllable and significant.

Doubt they will get it from any team because technically he is just a rental.

They'll want that, I do not, however, think they'll be able to get that for a two month rental.

Maybe. Do you truly believe if the Ranger trade for him, he'll be a 2 month rental? Niether does St. Louis.

if the Rangers do acquire him, they may be better off waiting til after the expansion draft to give him an extension because then they wont have to protect him

No, I don't believe that. But, I also believe that any other team that St. Louis can trade him to believes that he would probably be a two month rental.

So, in the end, maybe the Rangers pay a little more than a true rental price if they know he'll sign. But, not much more, because everyone else that will be calling on St. Louis will be looking to pay the rental price -- i.e., there may be only one team that would be willing to pay even a tad more than rental market value.

I suspect if he's not traded to the Rangers, he'll be a Ranger on July 1st.

I always liked Sandy McCarthy during the lean years. Him and Theo played well together
- mdw7413

I've been to Sandy's house before, he's doing well! He owns a marina in midland ont.,and has invested in more than 40 restaurants, and now coaches in Allison, just north of toronto, he's a hell of a nice guy!

I suspect the same thing. I don't know what it will take for the Rangers to get him at the deadline, but if they are demanding a guy like Miller or Vesey, I would take a pass. How much will the Rangers pay to have him for a run this year, when they can have him for a free a few months later. We had the these same discussions about Brad Richards years back -- same situation, except that Richards was less of a UFA lock to the Rangers.

Agree. Besides, the way the team is playing in dzone, and with Lundqvist looking as though he has seen too many pucks over his 11 year illustrious career, it may not matter.

I do it think it depend on how they look in next several weeks. If they sort things out, and Hank fixes whatever the hell he has going on, then maybe they think they have a legit chance at winning the Stanley Cup. Then maybe they make that type of move. But, right now? I don't know, don't mind acquiring help for the playoffs, but also don't want to compromise the future too much.

But, with all of the above said, unless the Rangers go totally into the tank, Shattenkirk is still the deal I see happening (and I may not love the price).

Agree again, although if Raanta comes back strong and Hank continues to struggle, what then? Adding Shatty and the forwards as currently constructed are definitely good enough to contend. Would AV have the balls to make Raanta the man? And then lose him in the expansion draft....WOW.

If things stay they way they are, I have no doubt in my mind that AV would make Raanta the man. In many ways, AV doesn't have a never ending leash, so if he doesn't do what he thinks gives him the best chance of winning, he's stupid.

In short, I think AV plays Raanta if he believes he's a better option.

Honestly I wouldn't have a problem with Hank starting as long as AV has a quick trigger finger. You let up 2 softies early, you get pulled.
- mdw7413

What about the old Keenan quick hook? Sometimes it was 1 bad goal, or not even bad, just 1 goal, like Glenn Healy in that infamous game vs the Isles where Keenan changed goalies 3 times in the game.

We aren't in the room, so don't have inside information. You're right, if AV knows Hank is having issues he is going to go with Raanta. It's his job to put the best team out there to win games. We're going to see Hellberg/Raanta for a few games if Hank chokes again tonight. There is only so much leeway a coach can give a struggling player, even an ego as big as Hank's has to take a back seat if he is struggling this badly.

Sandy joked that he could have written his own book on Theo Fleury stories from when they were road roomates in those early 2000 years when Theo was a mess.

Rangers best fighters since I started watching, Mcphee, Nilan, Domi, Kocur, Mccarthy, PJ Stock but McCarthy was my favorite, during those bad years we lost almost every game against the Devils but 1 game in NJ he scored 2 of the best goals you'll ever see a fighter score , opened Brodeur up twice and slide backhanders through the legs

Isbister bit off little more than he could chew there w McCarthy. Remember that game, Islanders won the game big time, but we won the fights.
