Ion, I'm not so sure Kane gets moved before the expansion draft. If he's moved, the team acquiring him has to protect him. I could see him moved at the draft but I'm not sold on the idea that he's traded prior. Gio could be moved but only for a pick.
This trade deadline will be different because of the expansion draft. Moving rentals makes sense for the sellers like Buffalo.
I think the way Franson has played this year we could see a 2nd in return or if we added a pick we could get a decent prospect back. Jokipakka in Calgary comes to mind. He could also go to a team like St. Louis, who might need D depth depending on what they do with Shattenkirk.
Deal- Franson and 2018 4th rd pick for Jyrkki Jokipakka. Or to St. Louis for 2017 2nd rd pick.
Kulikov could be really help a team like Pittsburgh or LA to add depth for the playoff run. LA has an interesting expansion draft situation as Doughty, Muzzin and Martinez will be protected and that exposes players like McNabb and Forbort.
Deal- Kulikov and a 2017 3rd rd pick (in deal for Mike Weber) for Forbort. - mhp
You're likely right that the expansion draft will be a major factor in this years TDL.
Not sure how that all shakes out.
I just think that the Sabres need to address their blue line in a significant way and trading Kane is best bait we have to do so...as I don't see him in a top 6 here and he's too expensive for 3rd line duties.
Should be interesting situation for GMTM to deal with.
I know 89 says Murray isn't trading him, but I do think he will have to.

Agree with you on most of the above. Although i like Kane as a player, particularly lately, I think we need to trade him now to help solidify our porous and depleted defence. He should be able to get us a Top 3 D-man.
Regarding the above line-up, it would have potential to get us 90 - 95 points assuming our goalies play as well as this year and we don't get nailed by the injury bug like this year. Our NHL player depth beyond what you presented above is meager at this time. Also, i assume in the above scenario that Murray enticed Vegas to take Moulson in the expansion draft because otherwise, there is a $5 million 4th liner missing on your line up.
Lastly, hopefully one of Bogo/Gorges is gone and there is a replacement there too. Highly unlikely both would be gone. - SabreWest
Ya Westie...I'm counting on Moulson as either a) casualty to Vegas, or b) buyout by Murray. Enough is enough with all this deadweight ... bit the bullet and move on. |

I totally agree with you in regard to Kane for a d man. Hey, if Vancouver is willing to give us Hutton, I'm down. Anaheim has a bunch of young dman too, not so sure Murray would be interested in Kane but I know he's liked Ennis in the past. |

Two things:
Playing devils advocate: Why trade a player you overpayed to acquire who is finally producing as he should? Do you think he ends up in the news again? Does him scoring at this rate on the 1st v 3rd line effect his value significantly?
Also I think you and mhp are right in that the expansion draft will cause a busier deadline this year and if the Sabres are going to come out of all this as a competitive team we need to use that to bulster our D-corps. I think what you will see is a bunch of names coming up as available strictly because of expansion and we could potentially cash in an ELC forward for a decent defender.
Fasching, Bailey, and Baptiste are all exempt, I believe. I'd rather dangle one of them and a pick for a decent defender vs trading one of our best scorers away. I guess I'm banking on the expansion draft lowering the value of certain players because they are going to ultimately be exposed. We NEED to cash in this time. |

Sabres notable exempts are Fasching, Eichel, Reinhart, Baptiste, Bailey, Guhle and Nelson.

Thanks for this. Didn't know about Nelson. I see three chips there that we can lose one of and still be in the same place. Wouldn't you rather see Fasching/Baptiste/Bailey, packaged with a Franson/Kulikov (deadline guy) and even a pick, to get a good defensive prospect or player who is going to be exposed.
I think we could take a few of our so-so players, a pick or two and get a decent player. PHI and ANA will have some issues, same with STL and to a lesser extent MN. |

Great thoughts Rhino.
So get rid of as many rentals as possible...get draft picks and prospects in return, then use those as currency to pry a D or two away from clubs who will have issues protecting all their players.
Brilliant!

I dont know that all of this happens at the deadline though. Is there not a window between the last game of the playoffs and the expansion draft itself where teams are allowed to make trades?
Minnesota's always the first team that comes to mind for D help because of expansion but why would they move nhl talent in the middle of their best season in years? |

I think you bring up a great point. Can we trade post season, but pre expansion. If we cannot, deadline will be crazy, if not the fireworks will come over summer and rentals would be all we'd sell off potentially. |
