Teams can still try to be competitive without spending to the cap. Anaheim has had an internal cap for years. The Sens sacrifice talent for cap savings all the time and still are able to compete.
- belcherbd

For sure they can...because they drafted and developed their core. We haven't. My point is we aren't taking on a 3 year salary dump because ownership wants the team to be competitive asap

yep. wouldn't be against that, but likely wouldn't be happy if that salary was beyond 3 years. and back to your point, you want that space for flexibility and just so the option is there.
- hillbillydeluxe

Yeah, I was thinking more of expiring that season....maybe one more after if the return is fantastic.

Fair enough. I feel like ownership might be coming around with the idea that they might not be competitive.

Biega could be in a trade package merely as an expansion qualifier.
Subban replaces Larssen on the depth chart then i hope.

Because they aren't tanking?
- CanuckDon

Just because they aren't tanking doesn't mean they shouldn't have realistic expectations of where there team is at, and have contingency plans. If Bo breaks a leg next week we shouldn't be selling because we aren't tanking?

If not, you end up trading 2 1sts and a 2nd for Kessel.

I would like to "selectively" sell at the deadline. If that's a thing Sell a few pieces that aren't crippling for the short term.

yep. it always depends on the deal and makeup of the club. It would be easier if we presently had more younger players with smaller cap hits.

Weren't you paying attention earlier, Bo's just a 3rd line C. Very easily replaceable, now if we lose Sutter for any significant time I'm sure this group would realize that they should start selling.

To be honest, we probably shouldn't be spending that close to the cap over the next few years. We just aren't good enough to not have cap space.
- golfingsince

Resigning RFA's BO & EG will keep us close to the ceiling if not maxed.

I truly believe you have to listen to all offers. If something wows you then do it, if not then yes sell selectively.

Part of it could be retaining on players leaving.

what I find funny is people/media are poised to jump all over JB.

he trades picks for players, it upsets people, he says he wants to hold onto his picks and there is a reaction like he should always be looking to improve the club.
