who says they have to trade a big piece? maybe COL (or NYI), like TOR last year, would be ready to take picks and prospects. with Plek obviously, so the cap works for MTL.
of course it will cost a lot. Duchene (or Tavares) is a good player, signed to a decent contract, not a UFA... but if they want to have a chance at the cup, they have to move.
with the current lineup they don't have much chances, if none at all. - fidopro
Toronto took picks and prospects because that was the best offer they got for a player they wanted to trade.
edit: assumes they want plekanec |

oh sure COL don't want him, you pay a premium for them to take him. that's why I say it would cost a lot.
but Habs don't really have a choice. otherwise they'll be lucky to win 2 rounds. |

unless the offer really knocks sakic's socks off I think it's an offseason move. heck, they get the 1st overall they can trade that for a dman, and apparently shattenkirk may want to go back. |

I think MB has all the assets to do so. Just needs to decide if he's in or not. |

which top 4 dman is he parting with that will not weaken their defense significantly that will hinder their 'win now' attitude? |

Pleck, Sergachev, 1st round pick and Beaulieu.
Probably not happening, but yeah. |

I know, but Colorado wants defense (what everybody is saying) and you've got to give to get something. |

Who says he would have to trade a top 4?
He has 2 very good prospects up front in Sherbak and McCarron. He has 2 very good prospects on the blue line in Sergachev and Juulsen. He has picks.
He also has players on the current roster (Beaulieu?)... plenty to choose from and work out a deal Sakic would agree to.
Like you said, COL will probably get the 1st overall pick, even more so if they trade Duchene. Plenty of time then to get their top pairing dman. |

seems like the consensus that they would trade for imminent d help. can't be in a rebuild too long in Denver. the rest, there might be some overrating going on. i don't know. |

that would be a good start yes. maybe add a pick or a roster player (bottom 6 guy).
of course if COL absolutely want a top dman, MB is out of the race. |

Pleck, 1st round pick, 2nd round pick, Sergachev, Beaulieu?
Colorado could push to get Danault, but if Bergevin can keep him as his 3rd line center, that wouldn't be a bad thing.
I would try to get Iginla in the deal at the same time. Not a deal breaker or anything, but why not?
Again, I do talk about it, but I don't expect any of this to happen. |
