but we need to ADD defense, not subtract it

He is a top line player on any team. He is a 30-30 guy.
This team needs everything.

The Leafs have better forwards than us, are thinner on defense, and are better than us.

This is a 3 line league. You have room for 9 forwards to contribute.

While I agree that the forwards have plenty of room for improvement, our defense is killing this team. There's so many variables as to how a team performs, such as goalie performance, defense quality, two way forward ability, coaching systems, individual offensive bursts and slumps, injuries etc.. but to make this defense worse for what arguably is our worst performing group of the team is not a good decision in my eyes. There's certainly ways to improve the offense without getting rid of our top defenders.

Take our team as is, add him (say as a FA). Our team is instantly better. That's what I mean. Get rid of top D and I think we're worse off, in a vacuum.

Absolutely. He's been a monster this year, but I fully expect him to be moved as I highly doubt they commit long term to a guy that's had off ice issues and injuries, plus only being truly effective away from our top 2 centers.

I love how he takes charge and I'm not complaining about his play as of late by any means, but I do believe he gives the puck away fairly often. This is hopefully something that will get better with experience. Just an observation.

I would, easily.

You can find Jake McCabe's in this league. You cannot find lightning fast 30 goal scorers like Duchene easily.
