Matt Duchene is open to being traded by the Colorado Avalanche.
"When I say open to it, I know it’s part of the business, and it’s something that might happen," Duchene said. "I’m not hiding from it. I’m not running away. I’m not banging my head. I understand it’s part of what we deal with as pro athletes." Duchene doesn't have a no-trade clause, so he wouldn't get to veto a move anyways, but it's worth noting what his state of mind is regarding the possibility. Duchene still has two seasons with a $6 million cap hit left on his contract after 2016-17, so any team looking to take him would be getting more than a rental. It also means that Colorado doesn't need to trade him if the asking price isn't met, but the Avalanche are stuck in dead last so significant changes are expected, if not before the trade deadline then over the summer. |

I don't get trading him or landy...one would think that those two plus mackinnon could/should be cornerstones no matter what happens this year...are they thinking they'll get a replacements for either in this or next year's draft?
doesn't make a lot of sense to me |

They're a mess, and by mess I mean a complete mess. Seems like Sakic is in way over his head, he is no Stevie Y when it comes to the GM position.
Patty Roy bailed on a sinking ship except he just happened to bailed before he could see them hitting the iceberg... |

that would be the only reason...but still...that's some big-time talent...
maybe they should get themselves a legit coach and plug the d with some decent free agents first, focus on defense in the draft and take it from there...if they don't show improvement next season, then consider trading one or the other...
makes me think that losing o'reilly didn't help the organization that much either |

losing him without getting a top defender back hurt them
Didn't they try to move him in a deal for Gardiner? |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sakic just right in to the GM position while Yzerman had a couple of years in Detroit as an assistant. |

I believe this has been referred to - in a perjorative manner - as the "Buffalo sports standard" |

The thought behind it is that Duchene and Landy are too top heavy contracts right now. MacK is their cornerstone that they want to pay to be it. They don't think they will be competitive again until the end of Duch or Landy's current contracts and then they might have one good year and they'd be gone.
Varly's contract really hurts them too.
The last I heard they really want to build around MacK and Compher as their 1C/2C combo. If they can add some blue chip wingers to that group to compliment them on ELC's.. then that is the goal. |

oh for (frank) sakes, sorry but stop it with this crap. Its not sakic who built this mess single handily. Roy was the VP of hockey of operations and was acting as GM for the first full season and the next offseason until Sakic was formally made the GM. The same offseason that Stastny left, they did the team elect arb with ROR, they traded for and signed brad stuart, extended cody mcleod and jon mitchell to terrible contracts as 4th line guys, traded PAP for Danny Briere, traded for talbot. Roy was a menace
Roy is responsible as much if not more than Sakic for this roster. Sakic is not guilt free but Roy wasnt some hockey savant who saw this coming. He spent 3 years building that mess himself along with Sakic. He just pouted and quit when he didnt get his way to screw things up even more |

ROR wouldnt have helped this organization, if they still had them they would be in worse shape than they are in now bc they would have had weaker depth on the roster bc they would have more cap tied up in current players, probably wouldnt have been able to afford 1 of Barrie or Johnson, and wouldnt have any young depth in the pipeline in AJ Greer, and JT Compher.
ROR is a good player but moving on from him actually was a good move bc he didnt want to be part of the club and wasnt worth the headache with how he was fighting with managment behind the scenes bc of not being named captain |

Sounds like Lafontaine here. Too many chiefs. I'm still shocked they're as bad as they are. Apparently they're on pace for the worst season in the shootout era. That's our thing. At least we did that for Eichel/Reinhart |

yeah they are a mess, and that is exactly it. Roy left bc he said that he felt that management and the HC needed to be on the same page. Sakic and his crew wanted to change things but in a different way, adopt analytics, actually develop prospects and build a pipeline. Sakic should have stepped up more early on to stop the madness and hes just as guilty but this is more Roys mess. I dont see Sakic going out of his way to sign and trade for French Canadian leaders and veterans
Roy still wanted to win and he wanted to keep Zads/Bigras/etc down in the AHL, make trades to be aggressive at UFA to try and win now.
Thats why the Boedker trade was such a mess. That was Roy saying they can win now and make the playoffs so lets burn assets on rentals (Matthias and Gelinas too) |
