This team has proven that this way of thinking is all wrong. When the Sabres play what Eichel calls "North hockey" (as they did last night in the first half of the first period and in the third period) they outscore their opponents because North Hockey actually drives possession, and focuses on the most talented aspect of the team - its top 6 and to a surprising rate of success the Gionta line. When they play more conservatively, they surrender possession and allow the opponent to focus on the weakest aspect of the team - the defense.

Playing conservatively actually exposes our greatest weakness, rather than taking advantage of our greatest strength.

And that's dumb.

if only there was some way for the team to rid themselves of the person who isnt doing their job well.

I remember when they scored 10 on the Oilers back in like 2009. Stafford had a hat trick
- chilliard77

Did it against the Flyers in 06 too. Esche was in goal for every single one. We won 10-2 I believe.

Edit: It was 9-1, Max had 1G and 5P. http://www.hockey-referen...xscores/200610170BUF.html We scored more than 5 goals 15 times that season.

Stopped 39 of 40 against the Marlies and lost in a shootout the other night. I'm worried he's what will go in expansion.

Imagine the reaction if he tried that and the defence went all swiss cheese? right now we're just upset, if they lost 6-0 what would the reaction be? what if that happened in back to back games?

Again its not what i want to see, but its not my job on the line. I don't care if he gets fired, he probably does though. Explains why hes been playing not to lose for about the last calendar year now.

- Sabresfan-365

What leads you to think if they open things up they won't score and will lose games 6-0?

I see no evidence of that being possible.

I do see 6-3 and 7-4 losses possible if they open it up.

I just looked at that poop and I'd love to know what the hell I'm looking at with the horrible chart labeling at the top.

If they're using shots as their predictive value for win probability, ok I guess.

The fact that the defence is awful and the goaltending isnt good enough to bail it out. I dont personally believe this to be 100% true but i get the sense that Bylsma does.

Edit: even 6-3, 7-4 would reflect worse on him than 2-1, 3-2 losses

Here is the thing you are missing: you're so hung up on how "awful" the defenSe is and how inadequate the goaltending might be that you disregard how strong the offense is.

The teams record since Eichel got healthy (and especially since Ennis got healthy and Derek (frank)ing Grant got sent away) reveals that when the Sabres "open it up" - or play NORTH HOCKEY - they don't lose 6-3 or 7-4. They win 5 -4 or 4-3. And that is certainly better than 2-1 or 3-2 losses.

Either the defense isn't as bad as you think, or the offense is in fact good enough to cover for them.

My exact words were i dont personally believe this to be 100% true. I happen to think the forward group is pretty good. Not the part where foligno cant keep up but the rest of it is pretty good. And i would love nothing more than to play north hockey even if it did result in those losses. Play to the teams strength and watch those players grow better because of it like babcock did in toronto.

The original post i responded to was about not being able to get the players motivated or playing hard right away. I dont believe this team has this problem, I just think this is what bylsma is trying to do in an effort to minimize damage. is it right? I dont believe so but i think hes just buying time till he has a full team to work with.

Edit: I had no expectations for this team, bylsma set some pretty lofty ones which explains why hes so damn risk averse right now
