I agree, but McCabe will want a hefty pay raise after next season if his playing time / results keep rising. This was a "show me" contract right now.

I would say you can pay 2 D men $5m + and find interchangeable other parts, or someone like Guhle for years to come (entry contract and then his "show me" contract).

Similar with forwards, you can pay maybe 4-5 guys good money, but then need to balance out the rest with lower cost options (solid veterans that are 4th liners or entry level players)

NHL network show gave midseason grades for teams.. I caught Toronto and they got an A.. i think there was only like 3 teams with an A+ and maybe two others with an A..

No sarcasm, that is a solid length. I remember hearing that contract over the summer and was very happy, just thought that was a year+ ago, oh well. I do think he will get a nice raise, but he will have to earn it as a top 2 D man (which is what we having him playing now, right?) But that is pretty far out for me to be worried about.

my point was it was middle of the pack last year and it was our downfall, like it is again this year.

Most of our problems stem from a weak d-core, matched up even on paper it's amongst the weakest. Doesn't mean the sky is falling though. If they overpay and pass off a #4 as a #1/2 then maybe.

Edit: middle as in the goals against number, not the overall defense.

same crowd that wants bylsma to open it up. Which he should but the improvement in the standings would be minimal. We'd basically be the Jets right now, 8-12 in GF and 30th in GA.
