Draft and develop Defense which take more time than forwards. Once you got that cupboard stocked (this is now done) then work forward. Hello Rubtsov! - dragonoffrost
Drafting is a huge part of team building; truth.
But its not the only part. You need to sell high on players that won't be a part of the future.
No way in hell should Schenn have been resigned at what he got. Flyers likely tried to move him and found no takers worth a crap, but it's still a massive mistake on their part. |

Sure. So don't.
The Canes are putting together a competitive group at forward and on D, but they're still young and not ready to win. So they handcuff the team by re-signing Cam Ward.
It's like training with ankle weights. - BINGO!

You think a team is going to take on Giroux's total cap hit? Hardly any team has that kind of cap space. Flyers would either be taking back salary, paying some of G's contract or doing both like what the Leafs had to do.
And what are you going to get in FA anyway? Pay Shattenkirk $8M per year? - PhillySportsGuy
No, they wont. Which is why I think he is damn near untradeable.

With 8m in cap space you get better role players.
You upgrade your 3rd and 4th line and your 3rd pairing dmen.
I'm not talking about Boyd Gordon and Dale Weise. I'm talking about players who can produce and/or defend at the NHL level while guiding your prospects into the NHL.

I'd be fine with trading Giroux, it just all depends what comes back. - Streit2ThePoint
Think Phil Kessel trade (Not the good trade) |

He's not untradeable. He's just not going to bring you back the type of value a guy like Simmonds would. |

There are other problems I'd trade away before Giroux, however.
Schenn. Read. Raffl. Coots.
I hate myself for putting Coots in there, but damn if he isn't useless as poop in the ozone. |

Simmonds is just far to valuable to the Flyers right now. |

Yes, but he and Jake are the only two guys who would bring you back top-end stuff in return. So if you want to get top-end stuff in return, you need to give up top-end talent. |

Why do you want to move Simmonds, the guy is doing everything asked of him and he is a heart and soul player. They guy I would be looking to move right now is Couturier. He is a 3rd line centre at best, a smuch as many would like to think he can play second line, he has shown not enough offensive touch to be there. - Daceroni
The thought is Simmonds would be able to possibly bring you greatest return. Possibly pick and maybe top young talent. Also he is going to need a new deal in about 2 years which will be a lot compared to what he makes now.
Couturier, while not producing like you want is on a team friendly deal and plays all situations. Even if just a 3rd line center, the deal he is on has great value. |

I think Read will be traded. And if he isn't taken in the expansion draft its a guarantee he is moved next season.
Raffl is one of those players who is more valuable to the Flyers than anything they could get for him.
Schenn would get a lot, he is a consistent 20-25 goal scorer now in my opinio, but he might also fall in to that Raffl category of value.
Coots will ideally be cast in a shut down center role for this team if they can ever find a better 1C/2C to allow him to stay in that role.

Exactly useless or a problem doesn't get you value back. |

Oh, I don't expect top end stuff in return. We would be selling low, again.
The team can't go on like this. No point in prolonging it. |

If your trading Giroux I think your getting back a deal like Nash did for Columbus. It wasn't sexy but it was useful.

Different teams have different needs.
The roles these players currently fill for us are not within their abilities.
Schenn would be far more productive on a team that doesn't lean on him the way our expectations of him do.
Coots is suffering offensively because our team lacks the depth needed for him to really (frank)ing shine as a 3rd line center/shut down center etc etc.

Read is done. He is no longer a NHL player at this point.
Read, Weise, Gordon and Schenn being moved/bought out etc etc would do wonders for this team.

This is what truly would make him unmovable. The teams that would want him are teams no one would want to go. |

I dont know how you put Schenn in that list.
4th leading scorer
2nd in goals.
Everyone else you have I agree with.
