I think more accurately it is Mike Richards disease.
As in, a smallish guy who is built like a 15 year old boy having his body beaten up constantly by men who outweigh him by 30-40 lbs on average.
That takes a toll due to simple physics. - MBFlyerfan
I dunno. G is way more talented than Richards ever was. |

I am being a bit hindsighty with certain guys and most of the questionable ones aren't on Hexy. I just wish there was a better cap guy in the organization who could advise them on risk management and ways to save money. Voracek was likely to never have another 80 point season. Schenn may get close to 59 points, but his real value is much lower. Hartnell was certainly not going to top 37 goals again. Smart teams understand regression and take advantage of it. To Hexy's credit, he did lock in guys like Gudas and Raffl at a great rate.
I never said the Flyers shouldn't have re-signed these guys, I just thought they could have taken an alternative route with some of them to get them for less or collect picks/prospects instead.
Ultimately, this team needs THE guy as you mentioned. THE guy is not available in free agency and is rarely available through trade. In most circumstances you have to draft him and, in most of those circumstances, you need to be near the top of the draft to get him.
I'm not saying the Flyers can't find another Giroux, but think about what happened during that draft. Giroux was a fall back plan. He was not their first choice. Maybe that type of luck will happen again, but I'd rather have more options in finding THE guy than simply picking in the middle of the first round each year.
At some point, they need to make a move and take a chance. - PhillySportsGuy
Yeah, people who just expect the Flyers to find the next Giroux type in the back of the 1st or the 4th round or something are being Pollyannas. Could it happen? Yes. Banking your entire Cup contention on an inherently fluky thing is not savvy managing. Finding a $100 bill on the street is nice....expecting or assuming to do it again to pay my bills is not nice. The elite talent does rise to the top of drafts (and the Flyers are a good scouting team too on top of that, which means they'll probably hit better), and that's where you need to be unless you want to be playing draft roulette every year hoping for THE guy. It's feasible to trade up to top 10. Keller was my guy last year. I think Necas, though I've seen him a lot less, is my guy this year. Going from ~14-15 to ~7-8 is doable without gutting the team in assets. Maybe a couple 2nds (+?). Flyers have depth in the system. They don't need depth at the moment. They need ONE guy (and no, that's not Konecny, as someone mentioned earlier).
Getting another 2nd or a couple 3rds for some of the flotsam on the roster would help a lot in that. Keeping guys like Streit or even MDZ, or anyone not important long-term (or even short term really) for a playoff run is just stupid. Stock up. Team would probably be fine anyway -- improve even! And then we can still figure out what to do with 10 and 17 at a later date, in that order. |

He'd fit right in the way some of these guys stay on their feet. - dragonoffrost
If Hartnell was on this team now, as sure as the sun comes up, he would be one of the bums on the team that we need to get rid of. Take it to the bank. |

Given the Flyers moved 2 minutes closer to midnight on a UFA fire sale last night, what's everyone's over/under on the expected values for a team to get a deal done on the following players:
Mason-2nd Round Pick
Neuvirth-2nd Round Pick
Streit-3rd Round Pick
Del Zotto-3rd Round Pick
Bellemare-4th Round Pick
Schultz-6th Round Pick
Vandevelde-6th Round Pick
For the record, out of these players, I don't think they should trade Mason. Del Zotto should be getting one of his final shots to show he's worth hanging onto past the deadline. - Baxter27

I want to talk about Randy Jones and how you felt he was a legit NHL defenseman.
Please, indulge me wise one. |

But solid point - FlyersNapTime
There is no way Giroux is 5'11" and 180.
I don't care what the Flyers say.
