Hey Bill,
Do you think there is a problem of leadership with this group? As you stated, these type of games were a problem under the other coaches before Hakstol. - psuhockey
they weren't good enough under the other coaches either |

This is spot on. The Flyers have to play a tight checking game to win because of their lack of talent. The problem is the talent they do have can't play that type of game for more than a couple of weeks at a time. They have neither the attention to detail nor the consistent checking effort to pull it off. That's why they are on their 3rd coach in 5 years. - psuhockey
Every top team in the league, plays a tight checking game. It's not just a style you have to play if you lack talent, it's a style you have to play if you want to win, period! Pittsburgh, Chicago, Washington, all play tight checking puck pressure hockey. The Flyers don't play a defense first system such as a 1-2-2 or 1-3-1 as their main scheme. All teams play some kind of trap situationally. Now with that being said, I agree with your comments on attention to detail and consistent checking. It's not there. |

You are a right it is a tight checking league. However the difference between the Flyers and teams like Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Washington is that those teams can win games when their checking isn't there on a given night because of their talent. It's impossible to play a high effort checking style for 82 games. Talented teams can win games 5-4 or playing only a strong period and a half of hockey. The Flyers have to be dialed in all game every game to win. |

Effort can ebb a flow to a certain degree due to schedule, length of season, etc. But the best team are structured and professional in their play on a consistent basis. You don't have to be a top talented team to play structured hockey. Many teams have elevated their play to a level higher than their talent suggests, simply because they play team structured hockey, and make other teams beat them. They don't lose very often, rather teams beat them because they're just better. This Flyers team loses far to often. That was an easy win last night for Carolina. They just came off of the AS break. Were the Flyers tired? |

That was the worst opening two periods for the Flyers in terms of shots in almost 50 years. |

I honestly am starting to think that a major problem is the IQ level on most of these players is awful. They look lost, and their individual decision making honestly leaves you scratching your head every shift out there. How some of these guys can keep making the same decisions with and without the puck is mind boggling.
How is Read still on this team? Good grief what does he bring to this team in any way? What has he scored like 1 goal in last 40 games?
Our defense outside of Provorov is swiss cheese...I have no idea how in the world Streit is still playing hockey, because he is a pp specialist? then leave him on the bench and play him only when we get a PP, because he is brutal 5 on 5, and in our end im just ecstatic when he actually is capable of getting the puck from his stick onto another player from our own teams stick. |

I'm sure this was all CV's fault.

I mean, yeah, the refs sucked, but that was an incredible lack of effort. Coming back off of a break you gotta crack the whip on guys and get them back into it right away. |
