What facet of the roster has improved? It's basically the same roster other then Konecny and Provorov.

Did the Phantoms improve dramatically with an increase in talent?

- J35Bacher

The Phantoms aren't the Flyers!!!!!

(yeah I know some will be hopefully soon)

And I know you need a good farm system to supplement a good parent club.

Is jmatchett383 here today?

I was earlier. But now that we're trading our top forward, I'm refraining.

I would waive mine. I love Arizona and NM is so close by which I also love. same with Colorado. Trade me there
- nastyflyergirl

See! ARZ is a favorable place to get traded.

Both your choices are green friendly too

Ok I'll play along. This is year 2 of Hakstol. What facet of the game has been improved upon from last year?
- PLindbergh31

What facet of the lineup has been improved upon from last year? If it werent for Ghost coming in and doing what he did we would likely have missed the playoffs. Also, dont forget what Steve Mason did as well.

I get that.

But not every play goes straight from junior/college to the NHL. So you need steps.

Two prospects cracked the roster out of camp that weren't supposed to. And we have what looks like the #1 defenseman everyone has been screaming for.

If you say you 100% for sure knew at the end of the Washington series last year that Konecny would be a Flyer you are 100% a liar.

- dragonoffrost

I thought Provorov for sure would make the roster. Konencny I wasn't sure of, but who exactly did he have to beat out for a spot?

The answer to my question is no phase of hockey has been improved upon in year two. Up until two weeks ago the team leaked goals. Their goaltending has been below average, the play at ES is comical, and the special teams are pretty much where they were last year.

Provorov is their best defenseman by an enormous margin. Was he on the team last year? When you add a player who becomes the best at their position that isn't improving the lineup from the previous year?

#1 D man for years to come has been found. I'd say that is a facet/phase of the team improved.

Curiosity I just looked up the last 3 drafts (since Hextall has been the head guy). the Flyers have drafted 4 picks in each of the first, second, third and sixth rounds. 3 picks in the fourth, fifth and seventh rounds.

thats 25 players and almost half of them in the first 3 rounds. in the 4 prior drafts they drafted 25 players 9 in the first 3 rounds. they didn't have first rounders in 09 or 10.

Obviously it means nothing if they don't find NHL players and a few gems later in the rounds but I like the direction.

The #1 issue this year has been the goaltending. So many points have been lost based on pretty piss-poor goaltending. That, along with Ghost and Giroux having down years, is the difference. That has nothing to do with coaching.

To play Devils advocate...If Provy is already our #1 D man, and his talent is clear as ever, then what's with the argument (not said by you) that youth has grown under Haks (specifically Provy)? If Provy is so talented and already #1 form, then couldn't it be argued that Provy could "grow" under any NHL coach?

And we should be trading our expiring UFAs to get more of these draft picks in the 2-4 round range.

I agree. I'm not sure how a rookie can "grow." As soon as he plays 1 second of NHL hockey, he has "grown" since last season.

I would argue he didn't come in and play like a number one. Remember he did have some struggles early. So couldn't coaching be a big reason for his development from game 1 to now?

Well that is if a coach uses him. We've heard the stories in the past about a certain available coach and his run ins with young talented players.

Hakstol and Hextall are doing a slow build but won't hold back someone who's earned the shot. I'm all for that style of learning. I mean how many Janne Niinamaa's can we burn out before they belong in the NHL?

Yes, but if Mason was playing like he did last year, with Giroux and Ghost having similar years, we could get by that.

Now, if the some of the coaching decisions are weighing on these guys and affecting their games, or his system is causing the lack of production, that's a different story.
