I just don't believe the notion you can only build the core of a team with only top 5 picks to win a cup. Drafting in any sport has an element of luck. However, a good scouting department also develops a sound methodology in evaluating all prospects to ensure better results then others. I think there is more then just the randomness of luck that build the the wings, or Dave Tallon building the core of the Hawks outside the top ten outside of Kane and Toews. - ravishingone
I agree with that, but getting that star franchise player makes it a lot easier.

Of course not. GMs either.
Main reason: it's none of our bees wax lol - Scoob
To the season ticket holders who spend thousands upon thousands every year to help support this team, yeah, they deserve more than lip service like the beats get. Of course they'll never spill anything juicy and secretive (though you'd be surprised over the years), but they definitely do treat the event with respect and answer hard questions as earnestly as they can. Those people spending untold $$ year in and year out are the backbone of the team, just like large shareholders of a stock deserve not to be jerked around.
Probably the fact is that what the Flyers brass said (or could say) they did mean. |

People who choose to buy season tickets know what they are paying for. They aren't entitled to inside access to the coach and the GM. When you go to one of these events, you should realize that you're going to get some lip service. It's a PR event and nothing more. In a case of the situation with Gostisbehere, the coach should not air all of the issues he has with his play publicly, and hang the player out to dry. That information should remain within the inner circle of the team.

Hey, if that's what you want to do. That would really show how solid of ground one is on.

On Gostisbehere: very early interesting parallel to Montreal and P.K. Subban. It’s very clear that he’s the target of everyone who faces the Flyers, and his strengths are being attacked just like Klingberg’s. It becomes a battle of wills. You’ve got Dave Hakstol saying, “This is what the next step has to be.” You’ve got Gostisbehere saying: “This worked just fine for me, thanks.”
You grind away to find a solution. Just because it didn’t work between Montreal and Subban doesn’t mean Philadelphia will go the nuclear option. Vincent Lecavalier and John Tortorella figured it out. Hextall strikes me as the type of guy who will wait as long as he can.
You know who else is going to go through this soon? Mike Babcock and William Nylander.

Well said by Elliotte. As far as Subban is concerned, not to judge whether they made a good deal or not, but I think there were off ice issues in play there for some reason. I'll stipulate that I don't know a lot of facts about it, but there was a lot of scuttlebut. With Gostisbehere, I don't think there are any issues off ice in terms of personality, getting along with teammates and coaches, etc. I still truly believe that Gostisbehere is going to be a very good offensive NHL defenseman. Hakstol is trying to make him a better all around player. We can debate the merits of the method all we want, but that's what's going on.

That is actually depressing as hell. That is a lot of routine shots.

Long time listener first time caller here...
I've been reading HB from my middle class jail cell/cubicle on a daily basis for the past 5 years or so. This stretch of play has been one of the worst I can remember in a long time. A game or two here, fine. But this team is not even a little bit likeable. As a staunch giroux and coots defender the situation has become personally embarrassing given the lack of production. I know all this has been repeated verbatim but....I have no where else to express my feelings on this team, the wife just doesn't understand.....
As someone out of market it really pisses me off too that I'm shelling out coin on this team (game center)! I can't imagine having season tickets.
Anyway, love the content and the commentary here on our flyers. Hopefully the boys get things turned around. |

Giroux has scored 12 points in 5 on 5 play, in 54 games played. That has him ranked 261st in the NHL. That is alarming. - MJL
Flyers are 5th from the bottom on Goals scored 5-on-5. That's also alarming. I think you'd agree that most "narratives" can be supported by a stat, even the ones that are outlandish. |
