So JV was recalled earlier in the season, did he actually dress for a game?
I remember there was some drama around JB sending him down 'just for a conditioning stint' and then recalling him soon afterwards, but i don't recall if he actually played again in the bigs or not.
Either way, he's been paying his dues in the AHL, we've recalled Grenier, Gaunce, LaBatte (plus used Chaput, Megna, SKille, etc).
I don't have any problem giving JV a shot, especially if Boucher screws the poucher. - dbot
JV never dressed again once sent down. Like all the other recalls they are for insurance and don't dress unless there is no option beyond Biega, Larsen, Chaput, Megna and Skille. Guance made the team from camp never got sent down until now. So maybe he's the recall not JV if Sven is LTIR. But by the sounds of it not likely. |

JV was called up because he need to pick up some stuff. Didn't play.
Grenier has been called up twice this season I think and hasn't played. Gaunce started the season with the Canucks as did Skille. Chaput and megna "earned" their call ups by producing in the AHL, Labate earned his by being physical.
JV has done none of this. - belcherbd
meh. You could be right, i just think it can't hurt at this stage.
i don't follow Utica closely, but the bits and pieces i've heard suggest that he has lost that weight, is playing well and has impressed the coach.
put him in a situation where he can play his game, give him a game or two, see if he can bring it...if not, send him back (like usually happens with call-ups) and give him some more homework. |

That was my thinking.
If we can offload a couple expiring contracts (Burrows, 4th liners, Hansen), there should be a spot for him to audition.

I can't shake the feeling that for some odd reason we win the lotto this year! Odd I know to trust to faith or luck as a Canuck fan...but I got a good feeling - Bullfrog77
it might be payback for NHL rigging the lottery for the leafs last time... they said the Nux were one number off, but i think they switched the balls on us... |

Honestly, I couldn't think of anything clever. I've been cooped up in my home for 3 days as this snow storm has affected work. I guess I can go Snowboarding on the streets!! |

I guess I disagree a lot with that it can't hurt. He has been pushed too early into the NHL IMO and is finally being given the opportunity to learn how to be a pro.
Don't get me wrong, I'm stoked he has dropped some weight and looks like he has improved but that improved play is still not very good. I still think he will be an NHLer and likely even a good complementary player, he just needs time in a place away from the pressures of this market and hopefully some good direction. |

I don't think he is playing well at all. His effort has been very inconsistent from what I have read. |

The coast. Here in central BC, it's been one blue bird day after another. Not a cloud anywhere... 4 or 5 days straight. The coast sucked all the precipitation outta here

I don't have a link. I just follow what Utica fans are saying about his efforts. It's a pretty dismal portrayal. It's sounds like he works hard one game and then coasts for a few. He also has completely stopped scoring. #Bustanen |

He's supposed to be working on his whole game down there, not just scoring, which it sounds like he is doing.
quick search of recent reports.

"Green will tell you it's not about goals and points for him when it comes to his players. But, he said, the points will accumulate if Virtanen continues to play like he did against the Penguins.
"It might have been arguably his best game of the year," Green said after that game. "He's had some games where he hasn't been as effective, hasn't been as aggressive. We talked about that with him. He needs to play an aggressive, hard game. He was physical tonight."
Anyways, i don't have a hardon for him playing with the big club, just an idea.
We'll see. |

I agree, I was more referring to the Green/Benning interview the other day that he said he was doing better or something along those lines.
I watched most of the Harford game on Friday and definitely saw him do some good things positionally and taking the puck to the net. He still isn't physical and his shot looks like it has really regressed.
I know this will make some say that he is still injured but I really don't buy that he would be playing in that case. Perhaps he has just never recovered well enough or maybe its the competition. |

Calling him up would be retarded. He's done f*ck all on a sh*tty AHL team.

Agree with your post. The lack of physicality and his regressed shot are fairly alarming. I tend to agree with you. Bury him in the minors until he becomes a consistent threat in Utica. |

Yes the reports are all about having him play a power game. Be aggressive. That's what they are building up. Then scoring will come. Though it might be found more in the NHL playing with the right talent for that part of his game to come out. He might be up in March some time if JB actually sells hard.

...and next year, too. Let him develop properly, over time. He has 9 points in the AHL. 9. |
