Gustav Nyqvist about to be suspended for 10 games for one of the worst high sticks I have ever seen today.

Draft day is most exciting day of the year for us. Coulda been a lot better last year - storm88
I don't mind last years choice. We need to upgrade the D . I think as long as we trade one of our current D like Tanev or Edler then it was a good choice. |

well we are shaping up to finish 28th. So I guess we'll be picking 5th or 6th.
Vegas gets the 3rd best odds? - storm88
Im really hoping we get a top 5 or 6. I wouldnt want to fall past there though. Gives a shot at one of the top centers or best dmen in the draft. |

Lousier squipment & sticks
Everyone was comparable then to their time
Eg weight rooms nutritionists trainers etc r of these times
Less opportunity with less teams for playing spots
He ragged the puck to kill penalties
He was all around & was tough & fought
He made evryone around him better
He carried a team every year like no other D in history
Rehab & surgeries were less advanced
Hockey was much rougher not like the pansy game it is today
If Gretzky says Howe was the greatest ever & ignores the eras he played in cuz u cannot compare then to now & can only consider how it was then for everyone.
If not for carving up knees before MRI's & arthroscopic surgery his career would've been longer. Btw is a Vancouver doctor who operated on Orr.
Give every player today all the same conditions & then decide. - Nighthawk
I see it like this:
IF Orr had the same conditoning/tools growing up that guys like doughty etc did, he would probably be the best defenseman in the league. However since he did not, I could only say he was the best of his era due to how the league functions today. Some of the stuff he did while playing would likely get him suspended today. |

10-20 rank is Adam foots son, he would be a good pick if we got a second first and were in that area, im assuming well be picking at least top 7, especially IF canucks are sellers |

Oh I like OJ too. Build from the back out. I'm happy with him. But.... still woulda been nicer 1 or 2.
JB isn't getting enough credit as he should. It takes awhile to rebuild a team. I'm on board. Just hoping he acquires a few more picks this TDL. Last year was tough to stomach. Add a possible 2nd from CBJ and it will go a long way in re-stocking the system.

Ya I have zero problem getting him in that range. Hague looks really good around then also.
Im hoping a top team looses their starting goalie down the stretch. Millers value will go way up |

Nothing wrong with that - VANTEL
Another decent pick is still a good thing. Unless JB takes Virtanen over Ehlers again. |

i'd love to fast forward 3 to 4 years. See what JV looks like then. Could still be a very useful player. Will they be patient enough... |

I think there's a massive arguement to be made.
First of all, back then goalies were tiny, even with gear on, most didnt wear masks!! Scoring was WAY easier. Watch any old highlights, the goalies were like pylons. I recently re-watched some Summit Series games, even Dryden (who was considered a legend) looked like they grabbed some drunk, locksmith off the street and threw him in net, it was beyond pathetic.
Secondly, there were 12-16 teams, competition was nothing like it is nowadays. The game changes so much even from decade to the next. Some players back in late 60's, early 70's had day jobs!!! Its like saying Babe Ruth was the greatest of all time - its nuts, he was the greatest of HIS time, half the time he was hammered, yet he was facing some dude that just got off work in a coal mine and then headed over to the game to pitch. It was a joke.
Theres no doubt that Orr was a special player but to call him the best ever is hard to swallow. Put it this way, if Burns, Doughty, Weber were playing back then they'd destroy everyone, if Orr was playing now, i don't think he'd stick out. Different game, worlds apart. Incomparable. - Brooks_Light
Good points of course…but still pales in the 'complete' player argument. Many sportswriters, authors, coaches and what have you consider Orr to be best ever and for good reason…complete. What Orr did in a healthy 8 year period regardless of era or stats is unprecedented plus he could do it all. Skate, shoot, fight, defend…whatever it took. I would say that Vantel is close with Crosby being so complete…but even Sid couldn't pack Orr's lunch on his best day. Orr controlled games ENTIRELY and not only changed the face of the game but Hockey itself for generations to come. No other player can claim that IMO.
Gretzky? Sure stats are great but he really is the greatest 'one way' player of all time. poopty defender, never fought and was a class A whiner. It's like saying Micheal Jackson is the greatest musician ever because he sold the most records…ridiculous.
Lemieux was overall better than Wayne skill-wise but still…not a complete game…at all.
You could make an argument for Howe as he was almost as complete as Orr but still fell a bit short in completely revolutionizing the game. Howe always said Bobby Orr was the purest. What about Bobby Hull? No one mentions him in the top 5? That guy was unreal.
Messier has 5 rings to Gretzky's 4…does that make him better in terms of numbers? Beliveau and Henri Richard have 10-11 rings apiece..why are they never mentioned in the top 5 of all time?
And most players always look to the previous generation and quote better players like Gretzky and Orr did claiming Howe was the best ever…it's a respect thing…which is admirable.
All it really is, is reading between the lines a bit. SAying Brent Burns would have dominated back then doesn't wash as if Burns was born in 1945 and played his prime years in that old league with old technology so forth and so on you really have no clue how he would have developed.
Sure I get the era comparison thing…but to me Orr eclipses all that. I'm only 45 years old but I sure can see that Orr was so special in a way that I truly don't believe we will ever see a player of that 'complete' status ever again. So for me there is no arguing…he is and will always be the best ever.

I wouldnt be all that surprised if he makes the team next season in the 4th line center spot. Plays a very aggressive style and can put the puck in the net. If we can get a few more nice finds like Hutton, Tryamkin, Stetcher and looking like Gaudette we will be sitting pretty good.
Im hoping we can land another top college prospect this year. Does anyone know if there is any good ones available? Hopefully a forward? I heard TL saying on 1040 that he has met with a couple. |

I haven't heard of any. Havn't looked into it either. As much as I'd like to see Gaudette, I'd be more along the lines of developing prospects more slowly. |

All good points for sure. When I look at what Orr accomplished in what is considered by many the toughest era in hockey it's mind-boggling. And I'm not just talking about stats. |

I didn't think it was McSorely bad, but it was bad and he should be suspended.
Although he is not a canuck, (sorry to step on your thunder Bettmanhatesus), and he was assessed a 4 minute, so player safety will probably go lightly. |

Trust me Bullfrog. We definitely want Nico. He would be ranked number 1 if he was Canadian. Going to be a star - CanuckDon
Not convinced....lots of flash in the pan skill guys highly drafted never have there Jr game transfer to pro. He has the smell of an Alexandre Daigle to him ....could be wrong but I think the chance he busts is just as good as he becomes a star. |

Do teams actually care about the expansion draft? The league has made it so teams are going to lose a decent player no matter what. You can only lose one player from each team. At the draft there should be tons of trades for player types that teams lost in the expansion draft. I think the trade deadline this year could be a bit boring. Prices will probably be high. Prices will be just as high at the draft since teams know what they lost. I hope JB sells most then. |
