He moved out a guy that wasn't small, played a smart game, but didn't play a physical game for a guy that's big, dumb, and plays physical. We've all seen how well that's worked out this year. - HonkFortheGoose
There is a strong case to be made that Pysyk would have been our 2nd or 3rd best D man on this team this year |

When can college free agents be signed? Looks like there are a few good defenseman available.
http://www.sbncollegehock...e-brickley-pionk-kelleher
There are some high ranked dmen and the top prospect, Zach Aston-Reese, looks to have potential to fill one of our LW spots.
The top defenseman, Daniel Brickley, played with Casey Nelson and appears to may be the better of the two.

I think they can be signed once their seasons are done. |

I know he's not going to be the best guy out there, and he's not a #1 or 2 guy, but he definitely would have been an upgrade over Kulikov, Gorges, or Bogosian this year.
His stats aren't anything that stand out, but he does have 2 goals and 8 assists and is a + player on a team that's struggled quite a bit like we have, so I would have to think he'd have been at least the same here. |

Can Samuel Girard be the next Chris Letang and is he worth sending Baptiste or Ennis?
365?
Gerbe?
Fitz?
Other prospect guys? - Der Kaiser
To me he doesn't seem like a Murray type of dman, too small but has that puck moving and offensive upside. He's also exempt from the expansion draft so doubtful Poile would move him. He has a real issue with the what dmen he will protect. |

No offense but there is a bit of revisionist history going on here. Pysyk was on everyone's hate list year a year ago. No one wanted him here. Similar to Myers, Stafford, Armia etc. However, once these guys get traded, Murray is a fool and these reject Sabres all of a sudden become irreplaceable. The exact same thing will happen after this season when Ennis, Foligno, Bogo and player XXX are dealt away. "Why did Murray trade him, he was SO good?"
Book it.

"The term "Murray type of player" is starting to become as tiresome as "a Nolan guy". |

The problem wasn't moving Pysyk. The problem was moving Pysyk for a defenseman worse than Pysyk. |

I've been talking up Brickley since November. Yes, he is the best dman available. He needs to work on his skating and some scouts have labeled him a project but to me he has great potential if developed correctly. Also, he was at development camp last summer. |

False. I wanted him here. I kept beating the drum that he wasn't getting a fair shot here. |

I hear ya. But when you look at who he has acquired (Bogo, Kulikov) he seems to want that big, physical type as opposed to a midget like Girard. |

I don't disagree.
I just want a different explanation (from the Sabres, implied or otherwise, not you) as to why a player is or isn't a good fit on this team other than "he's not the type of guy Murray likes". |

Accept Murray has stated and it shows he is trying to acquire big, physical players.
Deslauries
Fasching
Bogosian
Kane
Kulikov
ROR
Nilsson
Lehner
All 6'+ 210+ lbs.
Edit - I see your post above. |

I'm still bitter they were able to get Forsberg for Martin Erat.
(I know, he's not a defenseman which is the topic at hand, it just irks me). |

Dlo and Fasching don't count to me, since he moved out a 6'5" Brayden McNabb to get them.
Also, the players that were traded for Bogo and Kane weren't small either, so also a wash in that regard. |

And that's fine. You don't necessarily need all 6 to be that, and since he's come in and done that, this defense corps has become notably worse, not better. |

Disagree
Myers - Not physical
Stafford - Not Physical
Armia - Not Physical
They may have been "Big" but they played the game "Small"
Murray seems to have one mind set "Grinders"
Murray built this team to be a grinding team.
Aside from Eichel and Reinhart who were no brainer picks at the time. |

O'Reilly doesn't play a physical game, and they moved out Zadorov (who was big and played physical) to get him.
I get what you're trying to say, but this isn't the first time this discussion has been brought up. When you look initially, it may seem like that's what he did, but when you really sit back and look at it it's kind of a farce overall, IMO. |

I don't disagree. But he still was a cheap option as a long term #4.

I refer you to the eternal condemnation of the Buffalo fan's "satisfaction with mediocrity."
He's a $5 - every body has one, and if you don't you can get another one by lunchtime. |
