Just doing a really quick sweep. These teams could conceivably take on a defenseman as either part of their 3, or 4 if they do 8 skaters which someone like Colorado could easily do, or the guy they'd acquire would take up the place of another defenseman already on their roster like St Louis with Bouwmeester. Plus Vegas is only going to pick 8 or 9 defensemen. Teams will have forwards they have to expose that would be juicier targets than a defenseman they expose.

Again, this is just a quick, preliminary look going down the list on Capfriendly at teams that could fit a defenseman that they had to protect. I didn't dive super deep into guys in the AHL that would need to be protected, but if you're entering your 4th season and you're still in the AHL then you can probably be exposed if you're adding Manson(who I'm not sure needs to be protected anyway, but you get the gist). Flyers got super lucky with Gostisbehere when he (frank)ed up his knee 2 years ago, he only played 7 total games between NHL and AHL that year, so this is only his 2nd year pro like Eichel and Reinhart.

think a bout it . Teams want players scoring NOW if they are to go deep in a playoff run. Kane is prime right now . I don't want him traded. We lose a bunch of goals and wins next season. Bailey and Baptiste are still 2 yrs away from producing at the level he is now. Draft prospects? 3-4 yrs unless its another Jack or Laine. Top 5 ? I don't want to be in that bottom / top 5 .

Exactly, you have to start moving forward at some point, or else you run the very real risk of being stuck in the mud like Edmonton, or Arizona, or Columbus, or Winnipeg, or...
