But I think there's gonna be a bunch of teams with "protection" issues,
and only a few who can take advantage of it

Let's put it this way...
say Buffalo had Risto, Leddy, Ekholm & McCabe
Now we are in the position of Nashville, Anaheim, Minny, etc etc etc
For arguments sake, let's also say that protecting 4 defensemen isn't an option (bc it's not for most teams)

So our choices are...
1) lose McCabe to Vegas
2) offer something to Vegas to choose another player...
what would that be though? A 2nd, & maybe a prospect like Baptiste as well
3) trade McCabe for the best we can get
Let's say to Arizona for Duclair or a decent prospect & a pick

#1 is just not an option I wouldn't think

So what would u rather do...

Trade assets & keep McCabe...
Or accept the assets Arizona would send us for him?

I think a team like Anaheim will make a trade,
Bc they have Theodore & Montour coming

No Parayko is exempt. I meant if they traded for Manson. Who would you protect? A 33 year old Bouwmeester at $5.4M for 2 more years after this one or a 25 year old Josh Manson at $825K for another year before he's due and that you might also be able to re-sign Shat for that ~$4.6M that you now have?

We would also be exposing them in my scenario
My point was that McCabe would be our version of a defenseman we don't wanna lose, which is a situation these other teams are in

So would u keep "McCabe" and send Vegas assets so they don't take him
OR
Just trade "McCabe" to someone for a "Fasching + 2nd" or whatever

Now take out McCabe, & sub in the 4th guy that all these teams won't wanna lose for nothing

I think some teams would choose to send Cegas assets
But I think others (Anaheim for sure) will make a trade
