That's hard to say without knowing what the cost for Smith is, if you're looking at it in a vacuum then yes getting Smith would be the better move from a player standpoint but I would think that Smith would cost more, especially with 50% salary retention.
- jaydogg1974

My sources indicate that the player's ability and cost to acquire them are directly correlated.

The bigger and better news is Schultz being back at practice. With no restrictions!

He just has to be good enough to help enough to win a cup. Anything more is over kill.

He'll be fine as long as you don't play him too much.

Pretty good for OT breakaways though. He's crazy aggressive 3 on 3 for some reason.

He'll see the same amount of 3v3 time as Ian Cole or Ollie Maatta.

Letang Day-to-Day with an upper body injury. Man, if Schultz isn't ready for Saturday, our D lineup could be a really bad joke.

Hainsey ice time really intrigues me. I can't find the average but found it in a game log. Seems like he's around 22 minutes almost every night. A guy with that usage is likely playing as the 2nd or 3rd defenseman on his team. Here he will reslot as a 4,5,6,7 dman (i'm not sure where). Lower ice team should mean lower QOC but also he will be fresher when on the ice. So if his analytics look a little weak I think you could assume he would perfrom better in a smaller role.

He was paired with Faulk primarily and Faulk played significantly better away from him.

He is what he is, he was just overslotted in Raleigh.

If he performs better it will be due to higher QoT

I don't hate this move, but I also don't love it. I understanding giving up a 2nd to retain salary, but did they need Hainsey that badly to do that? Not in my opinion.

What are his positives and negatives?

Transition game, skating ability, physical or positional defender?

I think you just underestimate how expensive functional dmen are this time of year especially since the 3 pt game was invented.

I mean Hainsey sounds a hell of lot a better than Douglas Murray. And we paid over double the return for his rental (2 2nds in better draft classes).

Mike weber got a 3rd pick last year. He wasn't logging top pairing minutes with his team and really only played in half his teams games. I don't think its the salary retention that brought the price to a 2nd. Any defenseman who could handle being a 4D in a big playoff series for a few games costs this much.

I kinda like this pickup. You have a guy who has never played in the playoffs. The first game of the first round, last years Stanley Cup winners can look down the bench and see a veteran soaking that in. perspective and something to rally around can give a team that extra motivation that will be needed against enthusted teams like CBJ. Washington is the real deal this year, last year they were too cocky, same vibe as 2009. This year they are dangerous, Hainsey will put his face infront of Ovechkins clapper for a chance at the cup.

Bit of a rant, sorry guys.

I get your point, but you can't always compare what players are worth from year to year.

I respectfully disagree on the 2nd though. The Pens practically get him for free when you consider his prorated salary. I would have to imagine the 2nd helped that.

I'm kinda tired of the Pens trading their 1st rounders. I would PREFER if the Pens moved a 1st in a hockey trade.

Hainsey is just too vanilla for me.

Either give me a guy with some upside.....or if you want a 'defensive defenseman' then I want someone with some physicality (a skillset we surely are missing).

I'm not a big fan of this for a 2nd.
