I say that, not because I don't see the benefit of an upgrade at the pivot, but because we have NO player on the roster, or seemingly on the farm, who thinks shoot first. . - CarlBradley
I think we do have guys that will/do...We normally put up more shots than the opposition each night, the D or goal tending tend to let us down...
in the farm or on the roster I see Koneceny as a speedy shooter, and there are others in the farm that will generate offense...there is a need at LW for sure...but it is not as bleak as you make it out to be...Yes they have not been able to put the puck in the net...but how many games did they wither because of a bad turnover on D or a soft goal when they had fought back to be in the hunt... |

Good blog, Bill, and I've been saying they need another quality center for 2 years. However, at the end of the day, I think it would be foolish not to at least move 1 soon to be UFA Dman and one of the goalies either today or tomorrow. Even if they squeak into the playoffs, which is still unlikely, they will have pretty much no chance of knocking off the Caps who will almost certainly be their first round opponent. Adding more draft choices and/or prospects is never a bad thing.

I'm not exactly Sammy Sunshine... but this board is getting a little negative even for my tastes, and by that I mean, we're trending in the whackadoodle direction now. Which leads me into the question of... where's Jsaq been? - Doc_Sarcasm

I didn't read the Marcus Hayes article because I had anything else to do, but if he really advocated a Sixers type rebuild, he's such a (frank)ing weasel. For the 2.5 years Hinkie was here, he crushed him on a daily basis. Then, when they got the top pick and Embiid actually played, he became tanking's biggest proponent. (frank) him and (frank) Philly.com for employing that idiot. - PhillySportsGuy

First, I wanted to apologize for my crazy Giroux for Galchenyuk idea. While I don't think Galchenyuk is better than Giroux (yet), I didn't realize he had been hurt this season.
I'm disappointed with Hextall. He's lights out with drafting. His signings have been underwhelming. He has made good deals that benefit clearing cap space and getting us more pics but in terms of upgrading the roster, being proactive with trades to better this roster and getting in on talks with teams obviously in the hunt to fill holes, it always seems like he's nowhere to be found. Sure you don't want to trade just to do so but common, we have holes too. Get in there. Moving Streit for anything with satisfy me, and I know the day isn't over yet but we have crap to give away.
Rumors or Streit staying? Really?? - SuperSchennBros
He added a top 4 dman named Radko Gudas to make the roster better two years ago, and last year he sent Luke Schenn to LA to fill their bottom pairing hole. |

It is just as simple as asking does Streit or MDZ mean the difference between playoffs and no playoffs on this team. Evidence and common sense suggests that answer is a resounding no. Even if he wants to still be cautious with the prospects, there is no reason for a team like this to have 8 defensemen
I can't imagine he wouldn't be able to put together a fair deal for Streit with conditions and/or retained salary |

Streit needs to be dealt. If they want him back next year for some reason then re-sign him after the season. They need to get something for him now though. |

Dealing the ufas is probably the prudent thing to do, but if the best offer is just a bunch of mid round picks then it's not like keeping them will crush the team. It might be a good idea to see if MDZ wants to extend for a year to help rehab his value. If he can bounce back, he'd be a nice trade chip next year. I probably wouldn't re-sign Streit. He looks cooked.
Either way, people shouldn't really get upset if the Flyers move only 1 guy or nobody. NHL GMs are weird. Just because they'll trade a major piece for a guy like Burrows doesn't mean that same offer applied to someone of equal ability on the Flyers. Some GMs just get a hard on for specific players.
I have already accepted that they won't be dealing anyone of true value like Schenn or Simmonds. |

I still hope Streit is moved for something today, but if he understands how much he has regressed and is interested in signing a low 1 year deal and being a mentor I'm not necessarily against that assuming a few things...
*Delzotto and Shultz are moved today or at least not resigned for next year.
*Hextall is willing to waive Manning to send him to the AHL next year assuming 2 of the kids look good in camp.
That would leave the team with:
Provorov
Gudas
Gostisbehere
MacDonald
Kid #1 (Morin?)
Kid #2 (Hagg? / Sanheim?)
Streit
Streit plays the role of 7th defenseman, with Manning in the AHL ready to be brought back up if more injuries occur. Manning's start this year made me think maybe he could consistently be in the lineup every night as a bottom pairing defenseman on a good team, but based on most of this season, and last season, I think its clear that Manning is truly a borderline NHLer. |

I'm not a fan of bringing MDZ back. He can only play the left side and we already have Provorov, Gudas, Ghost, MacDonald and Manning under contract. That leaves two open spots for Morin, Hagg, Sanheim and Myers to compete for.

I'd have no problem with Manning being sent to the AHL or snagged in waivers on the way down. That said, it probably doesn't make sense to resign Del Zotto anyway unless by some miracle MacDonald is picked up by Vegas. |

Very, especially when that pick goes from a 4 to a 1 if they win the Cup and we all know Hansen won't be the key to that happening.
As much as being out of the playoffs and a possible seller stinks, the saving grace is that it's almost always a seller's market. Vancouver has made 2 really nice moves so far IMO. |

I would love to see all of the UFA skaters go and one of our UFA goalies get traded as well (preferably Neuvirth). However, the fact that Hextall hasnt done anything yet might mean that either he can't get value, his potential trade partners already filled their perceived needs, or he's just not willing to give up on this season yet.
I think you're right about Schenn and Simmonds. The "big" sort of trade, involving the likes of a Schenn or Simmonds would be more likely to happen right before the Draft.

Sometimes, I feel like you can get better value at the deadline because teams have less time to really evaluate and fewer options. Better chance of getting one over anxious GM to commit too much. |
