The process of bottoming out and rebuilding works, however GMTM may have sold too many draft picks for the assets we acquired.
We're on the Edmonton timeline now. Not as bad as them, but we'll always be no higher than ranked 20th out of 30 teams at this rate.
So we kind of shot ourselves in the foot. We would have been better to bottom out and get the higher picks. So we're basically back where we started but worse... - mattsox
And they got an easy bail out with McDavid like the Pens did with Crosby
if we lose today and fall below .500 that will be with
kane playing like a top 5 on 5 winger in the nhl
risto improving to a 45-50 point player
okposo chipping in around 25 goals
eichel becoming closer to a ppg player
lehner starting over 50 games and posting decent numbers

shows us how crappy we are in the other important areas of the game i.e. defense, coaching...

Being insufferable is a way of life for some here. Their opinion matters the most because they are "right", making one "wrong" if they disagree with them. Self-importance at an elevated level. internet tough guys spending all their waking hours shouting at everybody about how smart and incredible they are versus your inferiority is akin to people who think they're "better" than you because of the car they drive or the clothes they wear or the wine they drink. it's the nouveaux riches of the internet world.
i.e.- the powerhouse Islanders of the 80s had no real "stars". (because I say so, even if you can prove me wrong 10,396 ways). - Khmylev

Nope but 7 mil has become the 5mil of the past. - dadeadhead
Yup. And no matter what, he was going to get it from someone. I think he brings a lot to the table, but would be nice to have his production be a bit higher.
If they could fix the PK, we'd probably be in a better position. I don't understand why it's been so bad this year. (Well, I do to a point, the defense is awful). Having one of the top PPs doesn't do much for you when you have one of the bottom PKs. They basically negate each other.

This further emphasizes the dead weight problem, which ties mostly to the defense.
How much, if any, of the dead weight they can get rid of, will directly tie to their chances of success next year.
Not that I think Franson is dead weight nearly as much as Kulikov, but those 2 not returning is a nice start. Add in even one of Ennis (sad to say as I liked him as a player), Bogo, or Moulson and you are 50% of the way there.
I left Gorges off the dead weight list because I think he is fine for one more year as the 6 or 7 D man at just under $4M. Not ideal, I understand, but for one year, it's doable.

Also, on the number 1 center point somebody made earlier, he was brought in to be the temporary number 1 until Eichel was ready.
It's up to the damn coach to realize it is time for Eichel to be the number 1, despite his age and inexperience.
