Thats my point exactly, there are still value in picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds regardless if the draft is "bad or not"

Like I said, I like the idea of Flames getting Lazar, just the price is very steep and to justify it who cares the draft sucks anyways, its a bit odd IMO

- DDM-Coga

I like the concern you are showing for our 40th-60th pick, I really do. But I think most Flames fans are comfortable with trading the 2nd for a shot at an organizational need. We drafted 4 2nd rounders in what was considered to be 2 strong drafts over the last 2 years.

If Lazar can even turn into a serviceable 3rd liner that plays well with Bennett then I think we'd consider the juice to be worth the squeeze.

oh right, I missed that but its the highest out of the Leafs, Sharks, and Sens.

I have watched Patrick a few times already, Love the Wheaties originally from Manitoba. But the kid looks like a big hoss out there. He won't be a dominate 1C in the league, but hes going to be a good 2C, which is nothing to sneeze at either.

I agree, I am all in on hischier

I think he might be a Keith Primeau type guy.

I compare it as Grigorenko has 60pts in 200 NHL games, while being decently sound defensively in a bottom 6C role.
DDM-COGA

unfortunately, Lazar doesn't even have that this year. He's made terrible mistakes in his own end that cost chances and goals for the other team... relatively slow and the hockey IQ is not there THIS year but was there the previous 2...
Hopefully it is only mental + mono that made this season a total disaster and will be at least a legit NHL player (albeit 4th liner) on a new team...
All the best to him!

Nothing wrong with that, I think Patrick will be a stud if drafted on the right team. If he can blanket behind an already 1C so he doest have that spot light on him as the saviour...sort of like Nuge, felt like he was thrown into a role he could fully succeed in at an 18 year old.

I think Patrick will go first, but I think hischier will be the best player in the draft. guy is the total package, scores, playmaker, good 2 way player, fast as hell.........I've read up on him a bit and in europe, for what it's worth, they call him the swiss mcdavid.

not sure if this is true or not, but someone was telling me that there was a stipulation in his exchange deal stating that no matter who drafted him he was required to play in junior next year......not sure how accurate that is, but if true it might scare a couple of teams away.

I'm really hoping we can get lucky and grab him. He'd be a real nice piece to play a 3C role on the team next year with a couple decent skilled wingers.

Plus who better to learn how to play a Big Man game at the NHL level than Jordan Staal?

was it though? I think he was playing on a 3rd line with pageau and condra 2 years ago, and last year it was pageau and smith.......I think he was carried by those guys and I think he was making the same boneheaded plays then except his linemates could cover for him. this year he's playing with Kelly and neil.......enough said.

mackinnon - Duchene - hischier

that's as scary a line as there would be in all of hockey imo

not much beyond that yet in Col....but that would be a fun line to watch.

I think this trade is great, he wasn't brought in to put up 60 points a year. He is very similar to Dustin Brown. He has a winning pedigree and he works hard. He is the type of player that elevates line mates play and puts up somewhere between 30-40 points, hopefully a season. We need players like this in the battle of Alberta. Time will only tell what the 2nd rounder will be but in a week draft and low percentage of 2nd rounder's to make the NHL, this was a good deal. If this wasn't an expansion draft year people would have been more positive about this trade. Hopefully the flames protect Ferland and Lazar and hopefully Brouwer gets snagged by Vegas.
- shayne

I just find it totally ironic. So many come on saying what kind of crud player he is & we wasted a 2nd round pick & then next breath we need to protect him for the expansion draft??? Why would we worry? Why would Vegas take a project 22 year old that was overvalued at a 2nd rounder? Shink won't be protected either & neither will Porrier, I would imagine one of those will be taken before Lazar if everything is true about the kid sucking so bad. I'm sure Vegas will take Stajan or Bouma before taking a B prospect that may not be NHL ready. So not agreeing with Todd on the necessity of protecting Lazar.

I don't think anyone was suggesting he will be protected, simply stating that he's not exempt from the expansion draft....so if you want to avoid potentially giving up a 2nd and then losing him for nothing you'd have to protect him

if he comes in and plays really well for you guys down the stretch I'm sure McPhee would look long and hard at him...........if he poop's the bed playing limited minutes on the 4th line (which seems more likely) then you leave him exposed.

yeah perhaps... maybe he was sheltered to a certain degree by those guys but from the games I saw (before this season) and whenever I actually paid attention to him, he seemed to be more IN the play and able to read the ongoing play instead of just reacting to it late... not saying he was the best 3rd liner ever, just that he didn't seem that out of place.
This year, he's a total mess! he really needs to re-focus and completely forget what happened since coming back from mono...

he's also a really big partier. my neice tends bar at Whisky downtown and she tells me that when the team is in town he's at the bars, (frank)ing hammered, atleast 3-4 times a week. bad habit, especially for a young guy who's struggling to find his game.

At least they'll have Bishop, unless he doesn't like money or the plan is to guarantee last place for a few years.

I'm thinking our protected list has been done for awhile now. I think that the Flames must have decided that they had an opening on their protected list. The Brouwer contract is not looking the greatest (he has had very little impact thus far).

If I were a betting man I'd say that Brouwer will be exposed but Engelland will be the one they decide to take from us.

If Vegas signs him during the 48 hour window they have, they don't get to take anyone else from Calgary.
