GMTM- "The theme within the offseason will be to do the best we can to get a defenseman."
Paul HamiltonVerified account @pham1717
Murray, "We're weak on defense and that's on me. That's not on the coaches and that's not on the players."
So he knows he needs to fix it so that's good. He has taken ownership of the issues.
Explain to me why we don't like this guy?

Yeah, he said something like he is open to it. Also open to re-signing Kulikov. He also said that the scouts and him need to shore up the blue line in the off season and getting a #1 dman is extremely difficult but if they could get a guy in the top 4, that would be more likely. |

The most honest refreshing GM we have had as a Buffalo sports fan.
I am okay with a healthy Kulikov on a 1 year prove it deal
I am okay with throwing a ton of money at Shattenkirk (he wont be here)
I am okay with throwing $5.5 per year at Alzner. I would like to see Gorges moved.
He has a tough road a head of him. He needs 2 top 4 D and if he is moving Kane to get one of them he needs 2 top 6 forwards.
I still think the expansion draft is the way to go here. |

Assuming we can't get rid of Gorges or Bogosian,
They might be our 3rd pair next year
Hopefully we can bring in TWO 2nd pair defensemen
At least then we can strengthen the top4
And at some point,
Guhle can (hopefully) be ready enough to take Gorges' place |

I like Alzner too, but some on here don't feel he's worth the $$$
Kulikov' rough season could see us get him at a bargain, IF we wanna take the risk that he can find his game again
I've been going through all the teams & trying to figure out who they'll protect & what issues they might have...
there's MORE teams than we've considered who have 4,5 or even 6 defensemen they'd want to protect
Trying to take advantage of that could be exactly the break we need to add a defenseman or 2
There's some teams that will have an issue at forward as well
For example,
I think NyR will be desperate to move Nash. They need the Cap space AND if they protect him they'd likely lose either Hayes or Grabner

Think of it like this he would be making $1 million more a year than Kulikov and he can actually play some semblance of defense |

I agree with all of this stripes. I like Alzner but some don't. He plays in lots of different situations and lugs 20 mins a night. Murray did say he will look for a top 4 dman that can play pk, etc. so Alzner might fill that need. I also think Murray has an eye on the expansion draft to acquire a dman.
Do we offer Alzner that kind of coin? I don't know. It might be easier to get a dman on a current contract.

I am all for going the trade route before the expansion draft.
Shattenkirk isn't going to sign here, Alzner might yes $5.5 might seem high but looking at how bad our blue line is I am all for improving it anyway possible even if I have to overpay a bit. Murray would have to be creative and move a contract or two Ennis, Moulson, Bogo, Gorges |
