On GR this am he claims we have guys who are actually pretty good on the shootout - first 2 names out of his mouth are Ennis and Girgs (who were not among the 3 picked against PITT) and sam was NOat among the 7 he named.

The shoot out is low on my priorities of things to fix - before this weekend we haven't even seen it since December.

But what does that answer say about decisions made in game and deploying people consistent with their skills?

eichel and reinhart are worthy hockey players, but we have better for the shootouts

Alzner's numbers are beyond bad this year. (relative to his team, of course)

I'm not saying that there aren't better options out there. I'm just saying you can make it work with Alzner. What you can't do is make him the best defenseman you pick up.

If I'm giving up even that much, I had better be getting not just a playoff caliber defense in return, but a championship one. I'm not sure that is one.

I would agree, but the concept of "rewarding" players with attempts in the shootout has been around since its inception. Bylsma isn't the first nor will he be the last one not to use this.

It's one of my pet peeves with the sport. I don't care if a player lays down and takes a nap at center ice in the middle of the 2nd period. If the guy can score in shootouts, you put him in the shootout.

If he is going to nap, I would prefer he do it in front of our net to provide some sort of utility to the team.

I agree with your preference to keep a 1st, but the reality is the need as a top pairing LHD and the cost is going to be high...higher that the second or third tier players we want to move. In fact it might be 1st + one of those guys (Girgs?) for the caliber we need.

I also wouldn't mind acquiring another High quality RhD to push Risto and secure a very solid top 1st & 2nd pairing.
