He's been adequate. That's it. He's not worth the money they're paying him, and nowhere near as good as the media makes him out to be.

A great goalie, or even "damn good" goalie, elevates his defense. If the team is not playing solid team defense Mason is lost.

Mason's slow starts every season since he's been here, puts them in a hole they have to dig out of. And the guy always has an excuse at the ready.

He'll go somewhere and be a backup on a contender. Or a starting goalie for a non playoff team. The guy is nothing special.

- LindsayCarson

Goaltending and team defense are symbiotic. All but the handful of elite goaltenders would eventually be pulled down by the quality of team defense that the Flyers have played for most of the season. When combined with the Flyers scoring woes, it's not easy knowing you have to stand on your head almost every game for the team to have a chance to win.

i disagree, and overall in his flyer career he's been better than adequate, and is worth the money. he doesn't get huge $. most goalies these days do not.

what does "elevate" his defense mean? cover for them? yeah, he does plenty of that. just see the numerous odd man rush saves he made last night when the flyers were up by one or even. he does this quite a bit. he nearly salvaged the flyers past the rangers in 2015...and may have if he got to play the whole series. did the flyers have good team D then? did they down the 25 game stretch last year? no.

the goalies have been inconsistent this year. no doubt. but his overall body of work is better than adequate. i would also argue the media doesn't make him out to be good. at all.

how many goalies are special? is corey crawford special? worthy of winning 2 cups? what about niemi? lundqvist is special in ny, and even he hasn't won. so many things have to go right in order to win it all.

i'm happy to keep mason if the term is right. i would have been happy to keep bob too. he clearly had potential and management/coaching/ownership are all responsible for driving him out which led to bryz which led to mason. he hasn't won anything yet. he's been up and down, but finally seems to really be settling into a consistent starter. playoffs are another matter. i'm happy to see him succeed.

Good post. It's not even about Mason really. To choose Neuvirth over him as your #1 is asinine.

Only thing I could see leading to that choice is salary demands by Mase.

So what is th deal with Mason, are they letting walk at the end of the contract because he was looking longer term? Weal looks good out there so far. Does he have what it types to stick around and if so this makes the trade even better.

the media gets hung up on him not being Lundqvist. Christ one talk show host said he would include Provorov in a package for Quick

Would love to be a fly on the wall when Weal gets sent down.

"You've been okay kid, put up some points and added some speed/skill. We just feel that Weise and VDV/Belle are more in line with what we are trying to accomplish. Keep working on that 2way game".

Sigh.

Can you think of any potential reason it might make sense to send Weal back to the AHL at some point?

It's strange to me they haven't discussed numbers at all unless that was the agreement heading into the season.

I think neuvirth can be brilliant, but believe Mason is the better, more consistent 1a goalie.

If they need to protect stolarz and can leave neuvirth open to the expansion draft I get it, I guess.
