Remember we traded away a few guys that would have been in the AHL right now. Compher for example would probably be 1C down there right now if it weren't for RoR. Now that we aren't trading so many picks away I think we will see the farm team rise over the next couple years.

It would be unprecedented for us in this millennia, but I think guys like Pu, Borgen, Fitz, Murray, Hagel, and Stephens could all see significant time in the A. If that is the case, our team would be significantly better than it is now.

It's still the GM's responsibility to surround that hockey team with Talent even if it's a AHL
He supposed to develop those players not have them in a losing environment and not be embarrassed to go to work ever day

Their job is to win and win the Stanley Cup. Nothing else. Losing teaches character was probably coined by someone who lost to make themselves feel better. Give me winners over a character team any day of the week.

These Buffalo Sabres are a team that are well situated to take the next step, but who require significant upgrades in two meaningful positions before that can happen: a top LHD and a sniper.

Missing those elements forces this team to play over its real capabilities, with the result that they crumble when they are pressed. Their coach is not the sort that can provide them the mental strength they need to play over their real capabilities, and, in fact, the complicated nature of his system may add to that burden instead of relieving them from it.

The GM has tried but has failed to find the Left Side Anchor for the D. Whether he's to be blamed for his failing effort is a question of perspective.

Bottom line, the Sabres still need to make changes in order to reverse the long streak of mising the playoffs. That long streak has made for a very cynical and pessimistic fanbase. But the team has shown that they are not as far away as their fanbase tends to think, and that they can be very dangerous if they are able to find the right pieces.

I wrote a somewhat similar post yesterday.
My conclusion was a different however in it suggested more than a sniper LW and. L-hD were required...it had to do with the fact that they need more guys who have fire in their belly to win and not accept losing.
Their captain has called them fragile and they have collectively come up short in nearly every game of significance this season.
Yes they need upgrades to those and a couple more positions...but they need those replacement players to be of high character as well to help hold each other accountable.
On paper, this team was much better than their production to date.

Lastly, I agree that a new coach with a different approach is required for this team.
