Murray MUST start drafting MORE defensemen!!!
In his 3 drafts,
He's picked ONLY 1 defenseman out of 8 first & second round picks he's had
That's just ridiculous
I understand going best available player in the 1st round
That's fine, makes sense
But overall, he's almost been IGNORING defense in the draft
Maybe Borgen & Fitz (good name! haha) will work out...
but it's really tough to expect much impact from guys chosen after the 2nd

That's why I always talk about how he screwed up in the 2nd round of 2014 so badly when he chose Cornel & Karabacek over higher ranked defensemen prospects in McKeown & Doughty (and Montour was also available)

Especially when defensemen prospects seem to be so much more valuable than forward prospects as far as trades go

i know hes a goal scorer first and foremost but i dont understand how you can commit 6+mil a year to a guy who

a) has scored 30 goals once, in his contract year
b) has never eclipsed 50 pts
c) has never played a full season

and to top it off you've got a ton of money committed at the forward position (or will by summers end) and a desperate need for a blueliner...or 4


Edit: i wouldnt mind re-signing him, i just dont think theres a middle ground here. He wants a pay day that he doesnt really deserve nor we can really afford to give. Given his age and how thin the FA market is year after year, its likely someone will give him something pretty substantial on July 1.

I'm not saying I'm fully on board in resigning him, but all you can ask from him at this point is to make the decision difficult, which he is doing.

Ultimately, the question becomes, can you win a championship with him being locked up in your core. Personally, I don't think you can with the likes of O'Reilly and Okposo already locked up long term, especially with the significant upgrades needed on defense.
