Might be a case of beggars can't be choosers. I like what he's doing but I hope our prospect pool doesn't become a group of undrafted question marks. - bloatedmosquito
Most teams have a whole bunch of undrafted question marks. Van may have a few extra because JB is playing catch up and trading away some picks. |

Dreger's been talking Alex Kerfoot from West Van possibly being of interest to the Canucks.
Playmaking Center, you think? With JB's recent M.O. on acquiring prospects in lieu of picks this kind of makes sense. - VanHockeyGuy
He might be this years Veasey. Preds traded to Sabers who also never signed. Maybe Jersey gives him up to Nucks now for a little something just not for a draft pick.
Perhaps JB can dangle a Grenier or Biega type player? As a take something instead of lose as to free agency. That's if Kerfoot insiders have spilled he wants to sign with Nucks. Otherwise wait it out to August and sign him for free. |

So, he is still "property" of NJ then. If Benning talks with him beforehand you would think it would be deemed tampering. Don't think Benning wants to get another fine/league discipline again.
I think Benning would have to trade for his rights to even have discussions with or about this guy.(similar to Vesey situation last year).
Dreger could be fishing on this one.
Quick fact: we currently have 4 defenseman on nhl roster that have been "developed" in the college system. Biega, Tanev, Hutton, Stecher.

Dallas don't have to rebuild. They under achieved and the GM was going to make sure they stayed close to the bottom so they get exactly what they need... more young talent. - bloatedmosquito
They have a decent base for their top 9 forwards but man that D…and goaltending. Need some serious work. Might take a little time there in Big D. Oil made them look like a junior B team last night. |

I get you mean making up for missing layers of youth by signing undrafted kids that show potential.
They said they have stopped trading picks. The last one was 5th for Larsen. Other ones we know didn't work out was 2nd for Vey and 5th in Kassian deal.
Those were the set backs he is making up for now with those signings I guess. Otherwise, his other trades have turned into existing roster players. Like Sven. |

Why him in the first place? Not only do you have to deal with the fact that he's already signed/property of NJ but there's 10 other players that would be better choices AND their unsigned. |

Roll the dice, there's no risk. Burrows was undrafted. - VanHockeyGuy
The only true risk is the 50 contract limit I guess. I just want to see true studs in our prospect pool. Not a bunch of bozaks. |

I heard Benning is trading this years draft picks for and going all in on undrafted 20 year old QMJHA players - VANTEL
I'm trying to sound like a bridge jumper. I just want to see some high end potential in our pool.
I think we are now referring these types of players as "scraps"? |

Having a bunch of Bozaks wouldnt be the worst thing, but I agree with your point that the 50 contract limit is not something you want to burn through for the sake of maybe finding the next Burrows at the bottom of the heap |

True, but many teams also have a blue chip prospect or two mixed in. That's what we are missing. Makes the lesser prospects stand out a bit. |

That would be nice but it's limited sources for that. High end potential doesn't come free. It's either by trade or draft picks. Though you could get guys like Tanev and Burr from these types of bridge young free agent signings. Don't know where that sits with high end in your view. |

Dallas are having a hell of a brutal year...
I think Benns offseason hip surgery has taken a significant toll on him, he's not the dominate player he was last year. Sharp is getting old and injuries are slowing him down. You can't rely on Klingberg, Lindell, Johns and Oleksiak to carry the minutes/load on the back end, they're all still very young. The loss of Nichushkin and Janmark is a big decline in scoring. Cody Eakin is having a massively brutal year as well. And Lehtonen and Niemi are both old terrible goalies.
the only bright spots have been Eaves, Faksa and Shore really...
Id say, its a real, "must lose" game tonight for us.... |

I don't put much value in late season losses for a bottom feeding teams. IMO, the GM probably realized early in the season that their D and goaltending was poop and didn't do much to improve it knowing a good draft position was the payoff.
Just say they win the draft. That top 9 will be real solid for years. High picks in rounds 2 onwards will also go to improve goaltending and defence prospect depth.
Maybe a few trades and shrewd signings could fix their D and net issues.
Either way, they are in a great position to be cup competitive in a few seasons. |

I don't get it either - although I'm not sure how much hype there really is...Vecchione, Foo, Kelleher, Sheely, Jobst, Ferguson, Gambardella, Smith - all better options and all unsigned. |

If the Canucks were in the same position as the Stars my arms would be so tired from waving my pom poms on here. Yes, they are bad right now but all that youth makes me drool. |

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to fill a 50 contract quota? JBs got his crew shaking down 8 rinks for talent. |
