But see now you're spinning it. This isnt some 2nd rounder from europe that needs to be eased in. But an entire year was tossed to draft him. A core spot is dedicated to him, the expectations will and should be high.
- Sabresfan-365

I'm not spinning it - are expectations of a player not personal? I'd think this fun "debate" over the last couple days shows that. Do you think there were people knocking Barkov during his first two seasons, expecting more out of the #2 pick? Look what happened to him.

Your expectations on the team/players are different than others. Reinhart isn't meeting your expectations, which is fine, but that doesn't mean he's not going to turn out to be much better than his "measly" .50 PPG self - and I'll save you the breath - I KNOW YOU LITERALLY NEVER SAID THAT, JESUS CHRIST!

But the constant criticism of a guy in his 2nd year who has put up good numbers on a crap team is the "disconnect" here on the boards.

I'd much prefer the newly drafted kids to put their time in the minors, barring exceptional play of course.

Buffalo already has enough kids that they need to see more of (Bailey, Baptiste, Fasching, Carrier, plus Nylander is a year ahead of Asplund) and not enough places for them.

Unless there are injuries, I'd love to see Rochester get to see some talent, since they missed out on 2 seasons of Buffalo high draft picks.

I agree. However, it sounds like Murray doesn't.

were they not? see it a lot now a days. NBCSN was all over dylan larkin as well last night.

That's fair, i just dont think its a big deal that people expect more from him. I do think he's been pretty good and wish he was playing centre from day 1 this year.

That's my point!! Fans were riding a guy and then, OMG, he took an upswing in year 3!! If this TEAM was good, and Reinhart dragged it down, by all means I see no reason not to knock the kid. But when the team sucks as bad as they do, I just don't understand the need to bash a 2nd year guy who puts up 42 as a rookie and has a decent shot at hitting 50 in year 2.

It's not a big deal to expect more from him, but the arguments read as "he's a flop because he couldn't do what so-and-so did".

And (frank)ing spell center right!!!!!

Am I crazy, or is there not a difference between Barkov playing his first year as a center right after his draft year, to Reinhart playing wing after giving an extra year to develop.

The "first 2 years" for both are entirely different

I'm genuinely asking. I think it's totally different situations.

It's like saying Tyler Myers had a better first two years than Ekblad, despite Ekblad playing as a true rookie, and Myers going back to juniors for a year

suppose different era now. You hear a lot about how younger players are better prepped for the nhl and why you tend to see a lot of them establish themselves by year 2 or 3.

Not saying Sam cant take an even bigger step next year just that personally wish he was impactful the same way marner has been for the leafs for example.

So again, like him being sent to juniors...it's Sam's fault that his genius coach didn't play him at center?

My goal wasn't to compare that closely these two players, but to point out to Gerbe who fawns over Barkov that the kid started slow and then blossomed, yet Gerbe and others are giving a guy on our team a hard time over a guy who has performed better (points wise) than a guy he was fawning over, so ya know...perhaps it's too early to complain about his develpment.

Neither. I'm just saying the two seasons aren't comparable IMO.

Reinhart got a 9 game taste, and was able to go develop for a year. Barkov was thrown in a lineup at 18

Leafs have been a more offensively-minded team than Buffalo for a while now, have they not? (seriously asking, I always picture them being more run and gun out of need since their goaltending always seemed to be bad in my head)

Marner was always a more offensive type guy in juniors than Reinhart (and a scoring winger where Sam was a Center in juniors).

Barkov was inarguably better then for a rookie season then, according to that, right? He would be deemed a more skilled player?

Did Sam REALLY develop in that last Juniors season? He put on weight and played against "kids", "dominating" in his time back in Juniors against weaker competition.

The reason I throw out age as an argument is because it's two young guys in their years against the best of the best. It's not a dismissal that there's a discrepancy, but since it's so painfully obvious that Barkov is the better player apparently, shouldn't he have excelled more than Reinhart?

another thing regarding the skunk

when your coach has a defensive game plan, the numbers are not going to be as good as players on the oilers and leafs

Defensive gameplan with an oft-ridiculed defense. Recipe for success.

Reinhart is used primarily in offensive situations.

His start % in the off zone is 53.2%
For comparisons sake O'Reilly is given 43% in the offensive zone

Dude, you don't get it.

On 53.2% of the three occasions we try to score a goal, Reinhart is on the ice.

We have the #1 PP in the NHL, that Sam Reinhart is apart of, on the 1st unit.

He was on a line with one of the best players in the NHL for 30-40 games

Yes, we know the coach wants 0 goals to be scored, and he's at such a disadvantage
