Playing awful team defense is masked by the scoring woes this season. What is Voracek a -26? Teams at will are bringing dmen and wingers down towards the dots on the offside and wide open all season .

Mason said it best last night, we needed a better effort. That sums up the entire team defense problem this year. Going from 12th to somewhere around 26th is brutal.

I don't think it's reasonable to assume Couturier's increased scoring has anything to do with Filppula unless you have evidence that suggests his matchups are easier now. I think it's just a normal hot streak that most players have throughout the season.
- PhillySportsGuy

Hockey pundits love to assign reasons for things happening that are more likely natural variations. Like when Mason was supposedly playing better because Neuvirth was injured.

I have zero doubt that Ghost's struggles this season would have been blamed on pressure from his new contract if Hextall had signed him to one in the summer.

Most of the time. But you can look to trade for it.

I mean Dallas didn't draft Seguin.

In regards to drafting for one I actually like Vilardi from Windsor. But your going to have to be in the top 3 to get him.

- J35Bacher

I love Vilardi, and if they end up with a late top 10 pick, moving up to 3 just might be doable.

That was actually honest. I don't think Florida would trade him unless you really overpaid though.

Another name I thought of, and not sure if it would work since they moved a big piece for him but Ryan Johansen is a RFA this year. 6'3'' 24 year old. Would Simmonds work in a deal like that?

What kind of package would it take for Johansen?

Nashville gave up a lot to get him, I doubt they are looking to move him now.

He was probably right but I hated hearing it from him. Because how many times could this team have said they needed better goaltending in a lot of those early games.

Team wise, the poor team defense has been the catalyst for the subpar season from the start.

I thought Hakstol would be safe no matter what, but I'm not sure now. Past precedent suggests not a great track record of college coaches making the jump directly to the NHL. It hasn't helped him that Lappy has very limited experience as a coach. Murphy has been okay I guess. Maybe he is just a very good college coach, and that isn't meant as an insult

I think Yzerman gutted his team at the deadline so he wouldn't have to move Drouin for cap reasons. Palat might be the odd man out in Tampa, unless they expose Killorn and Vegas take him even though he has six (six!) years left.
- Feanor

Yzerman always seems to get things done though. Guys will take less and he'll finagle a way out of a bad contract if he needs to. Some team will help him and no one will put pressure on him to sign his rfas to big money deals.

He'll probably get Callahan to waive his NMC for the ED because Callahan's contract is so awful Vegas won't go near it.

That's what I dont get. How anyone can beleive that Simmonds could be the center piece of a deal netting Draisaitl is beyond me. Even with San Heiman and a 1st added.
- MJL

I don't want to be harsh about it because not everyone spends as much time at work as I do considering NHL trades and trade possibilities, and it's human nature to want to get a good deal.

Also, Edmonton having McDavid distracts from the fact that Draisaitl is the best player from the 2014 draft.

It's not surprising. You see it in football all the time. Great college coach, but can't succeed in the NFL. Whether hockey or football, the difference between coaching college kids and coaching adult professionals in the best league in the world is enormous.

Hakstol is safe for another season or so. I've repeatedly said that Hakstol is a good hockey coach but it remains to be seen if he is a good NHL coach.

•On second-year coach Dave Hakstol’s performance this season: “Dave’s done a good job. I have no issue with the job he’s done. Are we having a great year? No. But it’s not over. We’ll sit down at the end of the year and we’ll evaluate our personnel and free agents and restricted free agents and make decisions at an appropriate time.

There really isn't a package the Flyers could offer without drastically overpaying. Nashville looked for a 1C for years. They aren't going to part with him now.

Like YJ said earlier, the key for the Flyers is going to be either finding one in the middle of the draft or finding a draft +1 or 2 year guy. Both options are risky. Once guys become 1C's, teams don't normally trade them.

I get that.

But there were some soft goals this year. Goalies also have to stop the shots they are supposed to. Early in the season that wasn't the case.

So, is Lamarche now a legit AHL player now? If I recall correctly, he's been playing in the ECHL for the majority of his time in the organization. How many defensemen would have to be on their deathbeds for him to get called up to the NHL?

.905 and .887 are not acceptable save percentage numbers.

Like, if your numbers are comparable to Cam Ward, you're playing pretty bad.

So with that being the case, if Vegas were to get somewhere in the top 3 would you move Simmonds for it? I think Simmonds could be a player Vegas could market and put as the captain and build with.

At 3 you get a pick of Patrick, Hischier or Vilardi(who I would take).
