what is worse
E. Kane at 6 per
or Myers at 5.5 per - homiedclown
One isn't any worse than the other. Neither makes you a championship contender. |

he is not a top 4 on this team
no way pysyk leapfrogs bogo or risto for our top 4
the difference between falk, a cheap free agent we signed and pysyk is minimal at best - homiedclown

Myers. Because this year he didn't even play.
For the record, I like the player, but don't want him back.
He's good in a north south system like WPG, and has a great start, but he'd be a wreck here IMO |

We can't score on Halak, the same guy that got sent down for what 20 games or so ? what a joke. The whole team stinks. |

I mentioned this before, and I forgot where I saw/heard it, but the Chicago Blackhawks have one 3 cups in seven seasons and are a strong contender for the Cup this year. Most would believe they are the best team in the last decade. In their three cup runs, there are only six players that were part of all three teams: Kane, Toews, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook, and Hjalmarrsson. Everybody else has been moved in and out, including some very good players (but not great ones).
The Blackhawks have shown that you can really only afford to keep six players tied up for an extended period of time. The rest of the team you need to make interchangable. Assuming that the goal is to build a championship caliber team for an extended period of time, which it should be, who are the Sabres six? Eichel would be one. Ristolainen would be another. O'Reilly and Okposo are already locked up, so unless you move them (not saying you should or shouldn't), that leaves two spots. This defense as constructed is a tire fire, so you have to get at least one more defenseman that's worth locking up (from where, I don't know). By locking up Kane to a long term deal, you are making him that sixth guy. This doesn't even begin to ask the question of what to do with Sam Reinhart.
The question you need to ask is: does that make you a championship caliber team? Do we really see this team winning a cup with a core of Eichel, O'Reilly, Kane, Okposo, Ristolainen, and even the best defenseman in the league (take your pick...getting him is out of the question, but let's use him anyway for poops and giggles)? I don't. Kane is a luxury type of player for an already solidly built team. He's one you add when you already have a solidly built team. I would argue Okposo is as well, but they already have him locked up for quite a while. The team has too many holes for luxury players right now. The reality is that you can't afford to lock up Kane and expect to become Cup contender, not with the way this team is constructed right now. - buffalofan19
I agree with your point but not the magic number of 6, especially with them now paying two guys $10M each.
That said, I wouldn't pay Kane either as the defense needs help so badly that he's a logical fit as a trade piece.
I think we'd all rather trade Kane then Reinhart, almost based on salary and age alone, if one of them had to go for a quality D man. |

I'd take him back for free, but not someone I'd pursue.
I don't mind Kane being here. He's been fine this year. I just wouldn't give him a big extension |

They had to move them eventually though. The goal is to become a perennial contender. You don't do that with Kane. You might be able to if you didn't have O'Reilly and Okposo locked up already. It might fit next year, and maybe even year or two after, but eventually, you will have to get out from under that contract. Like sbroads said, $6 million for 45 points isn't worth needing to get out from under ever, regardless of how much his hardnosed play makes the blue collar fanbase feel better about itself.
People like to point to the "market" and what it will pay for a player like Kane. However, people don't seem to realize that the same "market" is set by teams that are mediocre or worse. If Evander Kane were on the Blackhawks right now, under the same contract situation, Chicago wouldn't think twice, and let him walk (or trade him before his contract runs out), off ice shenanigans or no off ice shenanigans. - buffalofan19
the object should be to get to the promised land first and worry about the "perennial" stuff later...
you don't let your best players walk...kane leads the team in goals, and he's one of the better scorers 5v5 in the league...he's a powerforward the likes of which we haven't seen in buffalo in decades...if he likes it here and is willing to be reasonable with his demands, why create another hole by moving him? |

Isn't the hope that the core players would include Reinhart, meaning the next two years would show serious development from him, meaning Kane could go as part of a D for an impact D man? |

Eichel is going to cost a hell of a lot. Even if the premise of two $10 million holds true, you also have to consider the fact if you make Kane that, you are already forward heavy in this scenario. You also need defensemen worth keeping long term. They have one. McCabe is okay, but not someone I would lock up for more than 3 years at a time. |

sure they do, but the focus for murray since he came here was to bolster the forward ranks...methinks he may have gone a tad overboard, but that was his focus from day-1, and I think that they have five of their top-six on the team right now |

Because he's a luxury. You can add Kane type players at the deadline every year. Championship teams do it all the time. What Kane is doing, while good, is not spectacular. He's nowhere near irreplaceable, even at his best, which has been for only half a season.
Even if you take your Shattenkirk and Kane scenario, it still doesn't make this team a championship contender. |
