He looked fantastic for most of the season. I guess next year we will see how well he pans out. The thing that has always concerned me about Laine is that he seems to be almost purely a finisher and he benefited by much better linemates than either Eichel, Matthews or McDavid had.

He would be #4 for me out of those guys, but there is not much to pick and choose between Matthews/Laine/Eichel and McDavid is a big step ahead.

Pegula does not pay Rex a dime so you have to adjust that number and remove his name.

There was a clause in his contract, so by him accepting the ESPN deal, it voided the contract with the Bills. Pretty smart on both parts. Rex is still getting paid, and Pegula is off the hook.

So knowing what we know about McDavid, Matthews and Eichel now and for the purpose of this exercise were all in the same draft class, what order would they be drafted?

You are arguing against the wrong person maybe. I never asserted that Matthews was dominant.

I have only debated the Eichel was much better this year, and what I found to be a pretty incorrect description of the differences between Eichel and Matthews.

For the record, if I had to look at differences between the two, I would simplify it by saying say Eichel is going to be the more physically imposing, difficult to stop, player whereas Matthews will be the more dynamic guy. Both will be very good 1st line centers.

This has happened in many rebuilds. it only appears unacceptable because the GM set sky high expectations and made big moves to try and get that but failed.

Jack is the only guy I do not trade.
If Risto can bring me someone like I dont Know Taylor hall back I'm all for it.
Risto for one of Duchene/Mac I do it.

Then I turn and trade Reinhart to Anaheim/Carolina for a d-man
Trade Kane and a 2 for a d-man
Sign Antipin.

The Leafs have a lot of work to do. Even in this winning streak, Andersen, and some luck around their own net have bailed them out too often. They need at least 2 more dmen and one has to be a top pairing guy. Rielly has been mostly horrible this year.

Buffalo has some roster issues to address. I guess that is pretty obvious. There are still some good young, one great, young players there and some good vets also.

you can still line up the team rosters and see that they are comparable. The Leafs rookie seasons give them the short term edge, but I wouldn't say Buffalo is trending down.
